So, after making my first 'batch' of mag water last night I tried a small glass before bed.
Within about 10 minutes I had the most severe reflux symptoms I've had for months. Lump in throat, slight wheeze in chest, etc. but I don't want to just assume.
FWIW, I actually do have IBS and reflux. Having said that, knowing what MoM is actually used for means this makes little sense that it would actually cause a symptom it's meant to help. Many reflux treatments also contain magnesium so, again, makes little sense really.
I mixed 45ml with a litre of soda water, shook, left and shook again. Then when settled I mixed with 4 litres of normal water and drank a tiny glass of it.

Hi Dave, all I can say is I have to be careful with magnesium or it makes my digestive system sore.
Many years ago I took magnesium citrate tablets regularly and it was ages before I discovered that was what was causing the problem. Now I take just one capsule per day of magnesium glycinate and that's mid breakfast and no problem. It may be an idea to put what you have made into a spray and use on your body as some people on here do?
Thanks Jean, I will try that next. I have awful restless legs and I'm led to believe the mag spray is good for that too,so I will certainly give it a try.
I remember the old days of Milk of Magnesia for acid reflux - always made things a lot worse for me! If you have a wheezy cough after taking it could indicate you are aspirating some of the liquid into your airways - not good! In my opinion something not to repeat.
I can’t take any form of oral magnesium but Magnesium Oil Spray and bathing in Sea Salts rich in Magnesium were the answer for me.
That's interesting. I'd never heard of "mag water" until I read your post. I guess it is very "gassy" from the carbon dioxide in the soda water used? It will have been this rather than the magnesium that caused your problem. Magnesium itself is a harmless part of the diet being a central component of all green vegetable matter. Taken in high dosage in the form of magnesium salts, it speeds up peristalsis and can be used as a safe laxative.
The CO2 gas from the mag water can distend the stomach and push it up against the diaphragm muscle (and even against the base of the heart to irritate various nerves). This isn't the magnesium, though, but the CO2 gas. This also puts pressure on the sphincter at the top of the stomach - already weakened when you suffer reflux - and force the stomach contents into the oesophagus causing the symptoms you describe.
Well, it's actually made with Milk of Magnesia, so I'm assuming that that's the culprit.
I'm hoping the person who 'invented' it can shed some light onto the potential side effects as it's meant to be fairly effective and a far better way to absorb magnesium.
