Hi Linda,

Vitamin K is generally very good for people on warfarin as it helps stabilise your INR. See Irene's two posts about half way down this post from yesterday: healthunlocked.com/afassoci...

I specifically use the Vit K2 version and not K1. This article gives the reason:

ashpublications.org/blood/a...

The general benefits of K2 are also set out in this article:

medscape.com/viewarticle/90...

I use K2 MK-7, which is the most common version of K2. It's available on Amazon but I use this source:

naturesbest.co.uk/vitamins/...

I take one pill a day with the warfarin.

I use a Coaguchek, which was mentioned in the posts yesterday. The surgery should support you in getting test strips though you have to buy the machine yourself. That's probably the best £300 I've ever spent.

Personally, I think you will find in due course that your inability to take DOACs is a blessing in disguise. If you get good stability on warfarin then it's better than the DOACs with fewer side effects. I feel in control of my anticoagulation rather than it controlling me.

One little tip, don't mention to your doctor or nurse that you take K2 as some old fashioned ones still think you should minimise intake of Vit K (which is actually the worst thing you can do)!

Feel free to PM me if you need further info on warfarin/K2.

Hi, Linda...

It's been a while since I was in for a few days at the local hops...AF spell and being checked over...they found I was chockablock full of calcium and seemed quite concerned...but, I had admitted I was on D3 and they blamed that... but, other than tell me to stop taking it, nothing was advised on it by any Doc...I told heart specialist and he told me to continue with D3...which I did...

But, I read a lot of medical and was aware of the D3 + K combination being 'just the thing'...so I went for the D3 + K2 Mk-7...which is apparently the perfect solution for getting the calcium out of the blood and into the bones where it should be...I'm on usual apaxiban + bisoprolol...no mention of calcium problem on my last blood report...

Consumer Lab had a write up about taking D3 and K2 and had some interesting information. In some trials taking D3 at Dinner rather than Breakfast increased levels by 50% and taking other fat soluble vitamins with D3 reduced absorption between 10 % - 50%. Vitamin K was particularly affected. They recommended taking them at least two hours apart.

Vitamin K ( and Warfarin )

Vitamin K is essential for blood coagulation, but vitamin K insufficiency was associated also with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in healthy middle-aged people, type 2 diabetes, and end-stage renal disease patients

An accelerated progression of aortic stiffness, associated with the use of warfarin, has been demonstrated in a study including 18 hemodialysis patients

Warfarin may impair pulse pressure in patients with a history of hypertension and higher cardiovascular risk , contributing to progression of arterial stiffness. Vitamin K2 has also the ability to improve lipid profile by increasing HDL cholesterol and decreasing total cholesterol
