Leaning Forward/Heart Skipps

I read this article about leaning forward and your heart has a skip like you are setting it off, vagel related maybe? for instance when i sit down leaning forward for long periods i.e using my Laptop i get these sudden heart skip feelings and i read the below quote and wonder if there is any truth in it?

When bending over, there is increased intra-abdominal pressure and this is transmitted up the esophagus (or a hiatal hernia) which lies directly against the back of the left atrium. This is the most common cause of non-cardiac palpitations.

Reading that all I undersatnd from it is that your feel your heart hence the palpitations which as we all know just means that you are aware of your heart. As the monkey said "just straighten up and fly right" lol 😁

I agree probably Vagus related. I think it might be quite common albeit not everybody recognises the connection. I have for some time been aware that bending/leaning forward is not a comfortable action to maintain and I have met an AF person who couldn't do gardening as much as a result. We have mostly all stopped listening to our bodies and acting on the messages as it is too easy to make that doctor's appointment (not currently!) or grab medications over the counter.

Hi, I definitely get these heart skips when leaning forward. I try to treat it as a minor irritation. Thanks for a possible explanation. I just thought it was my heart getting a bit constricted and letting out a moan! All the best.

A woman I work with had an ablation when in late teens/early twenties which came on every time she bent forward ie playing sport or tying laces etc. It took a while for the cardiologists to believe her but she is now fine something like 10 years later

I can pretty much guarantee either a few short fluttery beats or to trigger off a long af episode if I bend forward after food. Could be putting on shoes, picking stuff up, stroking the (small) dog, etc. Also if I'm sitting in a low chair and scrunching up my abdomen in some way (using a laptop).

Always assumed the bending forced my full stomach upwards and caused some sort of pressure / irritation.

The day I was diagnosed I firstly thought I was going down with 'flu. I stayed at home and for something to do I sat in a lounge chair, leaning forward over a shredding machine shredding papers. As time went on I checked BP and found variations in it and the BP readings then began to fall, bottoming out at 76/50. Later admitted to A&E where I was diagnosed with AF.

Five years of paying attention to and researching this effect has taught me the reason is more likely nerve impingement in the spine, of the nerves that control the heart. Heart doctors will not consider this possibility. I have tried many things to mediate this and lately my efforts seem to be making a significant difference. If I finally get a consistent fix, I will write a post on what I have done.

Very interesting. In my experience it happens whenever I lean back in my work desk. Could never understand why though and my EP never could explain it to me.
