Do blood thinners (Rivaroxaban etc) lower immune system?

With coronavirus so much in the news, it does pose the question of whether the immune system is effected by those on blood thinners? ( In my case Rivaroxaban). A strong immune system is necessary to fight viruses and pathogens. If so I reckon extra care should be taken. Best wishes to all.

No they only affect the blood clotting , no effect on immune system. You are right re protecting your immune system . Good diet, a pinch of exercise and sunshine and a good nights sleep is good medicine

Plus having a good level of vit D. At this time of year vit D levels are at their lowest for those who live in northern latitudes as the angle of the sun is not right to produce vit D in our skins. Also a 70 year old's skin only produces one third that of a 20 year old's even when the UVB is adequate. So testing and supplementation is usually necessary. A good level of D3 helps resist all respiratory viruses and improves asthma too.

I think I read that anticoagulants can affect the immune system. Look on Medscape. This could be where I read the study. Do some research.

Hi Frustrated12

A research paper appeared in the March 2013 issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation entitled:

‘Newly approved blood thinner may increase susceptibility to some viral infections’

Although it should be noted that the research was specifically about Dabigatran etexilate (also called Pradaxa) and therefore may not apply to all anticoagulants, nevertheless, the question you raise is worth considering
