The program looked at heart doctors holding back data that suggested that more people with left main disease who were fitted with stents were dying than those who were treated by open heart surgery. The Excel trial was sponsored by the US stent manufacturer Abbott.

The European Society of Cardiology brought in an external reviewer to review the trial. "Newsnight has seen the report. It said that the evidence suggested stents were worse than surgery for those with left main disease"

The comments of Fiona Godlee editor of BMJ were very illuminating. This kind of chicanery is happening right left and centre in medical "research". This is what doctors are basing their decisions on. Same with pharmaceutical trials. "Trust me , I'm a doctor" . For me no way.

I agree. I just did not realise that it was quite so blatant, and that lives were being put at risk as a result.
