Article on Colds & Flu which I found really helpful
Very interesting, especially regarding the Vit D and NAC supplememts.Loved the Spicy chicken soup recipe too!
A snippet from WebMD re NAC so be careful with this supplement
Interactions. If you take any medicines regularly, talk to your doctor before you start using NAC supplements. They could interact with nitroglycerin, including blood thinners and certain blood pressure medicines.
Interesting article. I never had the flu jab until this year as I knew it was only effective for certain strains but I have had such a bad year healthwise that I felt
I might not survive a bout of flu (I am 73 with AF, CHF and PHN - post herpetic neuralgia following shingles in January). A chest infection in January nearly finished me off and I wanted to try to cover as many bases as possible to avoid being ill this winter. I didn’t know about the NAC supplements though. My QoL has diminished so much this year I don’t want anything else!
Yes I had the flu jab last year after a really nasty bout of pneumonia which took 6 weeks to clear. I currently have a chesty cough - but I’m coping really well with it so I really don’t know what is helping - but covering all the bases I can.
I think the point is if you are vulnerable - I am immune suppressed - then it is prudent to avoid what is possible.
I try to remember not to touch door handles when out eating or shopping in winter with bare hands- I pull my sleeve down over my hand. Of course husband takes no such precautions so tends to catch things first ( to be honest he does more shopping too) and then pass them on. Still nearly 4 years cold free is not bad. I knew it could not last indefinitely though!
I didn’t have my flu jab last year as every previous time, I reacted and would be ill for a week. WHAT A MISTAKE!!! I had terrible flu for 6 weeks and it is that which resulted in AFib!!!! Needless to say, I’ve had it this year!
Reassuring article in that the message seems to say, be patient, rest and give your body time to deal with it. Something some if us have difficulty accepting. Trouble is I am not a very patient patient!
So true about the flu jab. I had it last year as usual and got something suspiciously like flu with the sky high temperature hacking cough and chills. When I actually passed out very briefly from the fever the doctor said I had pneumonia and I got antibiotics.
My husband and I have taken NAC daily but at the dose of 600mg a day since March 2016 . This was the last time we had very bad colds with a long lasting cough and the chemist recommended the NAC for the cough as it fluidifies secretions. We have not had any respiratory infection since - till this week! Not bad going though and we feel the lurgy is not as bad as it could be and not as bad as we have heard others complain of. As I was taking NAC before going on Apixaban and it did not seem to have an effect on my coagulation ( this was tested before my colectomy and was normal) I have continued it. I have put it up for a few days but as soon as the cough is on it's way out will drop back down. We also maintain our vit D levels in the higher end of the normal range.
