Does anyone know anything about a product called wound seal, think there are others, which is available in USA to stop bleeding when you cut yourself on blood thinners?

I bought some from Amazon - just in case! It was just under £10.00 for three small tubes.

Hello, Yes bought it but have never had to use it; however, I carry a tube with me at all times. It's supposed to be very good! I purchased it on Amazon.

Hiya,

I am in UK, haven't heard of this stuff. However, I purchase a spray 'Wound Seal' marketed by Boots the chemist, sold as Elastoplast Wound Spray - an antiseptic and sealant.

Just for minor cuts and gashes, clean the wound, spray on the stuff and put on the dressing, job done.

I'm on Warfarin (Coumadin to you guys in the States).

John

I have steri-strips in my wallet and at home. Worked when I «spiral - grated » my finger. 🤦‍♀️ Also hemo-stat bandaids.

Never needed anything like that although I did use alginate dressing once when I snipped the tip of a finger off whilst chopping mint.

This whole blood thinners missnomer I think is the problem. Your blood isn't thinned at all, it just take slightly longer to clot and unless you hack into a major blood vessel normal first aid such as pressure should surfice.

I remember reading that in the Napolionic Wars. soldiers collected spiders webs to wrap on wounds to help stem bleeding so you could always try that.

I've got plenty of their webs in my house, so I'll start harvesting!

Celox is promoted to tree surgeons and recommended to me for nosebleeds. A paramedic acquaintance endorsed it too. The trouble with using it in the nose is getting it up there ( see yesterday's discussion) but on a bit of body it'd be good. There are other brands too for outdoorsy types to buy or people on blood thinners.

Styptic pencil is an old remedy for shaving cuts etc. I use it and can remember my Dad did. Quite cheap and can be bought from most chemists.

A year ago one of the alginate dressings worked a treat on a badly cut finger. Keep them handy in the kitchen:)

Unfortunately that link doesn’t seem to work for me and I couldn’t find info on Celox.

The link to my post worked for me just now. But, in the post I linked to Savlon Alginate dressings, which are currently unavailable, and to Celox on Amazon which gets a page not available. Grrr. But Amazon are still selling -- at a whopping price -- Celox products.

There are several other alginate products on the market. This one caught my eye amazon.co.uk/Activheal-Algi...

One of the reviewers says: I use this product every three days after dialysis because of the amount of bleeding after the needles are removed from my vein. Now don't get me wrong here, eventually just using pressure and Sterile Wound Dressings does the same job, the difference is time. The time it takes just using sterile dressings can be rather slow but using the Alginate Dressing in conjunction with the dressing means the bleeding stops all that much faster as it clots the blood faster.

Thanks Ian - yes I saw £55 and thought - err - do I really need this? I can see the value though, especially for someone taking dialysis or who regularly has invasive treatments or if you are working professionally in a higher risk environment such as kitchen, garden - etc. Certainly one for every company 1st Aid box I would have thought.

I have blood draws every 4 weeks and don’t even bruise - but I think that is down to the excellent skill of the nurse who does it - I won’t go to anyone else!

For normal cuts and hospitable bruises etc alginate is good stuff and as the amazon reviewer says, it speeds up the clotting. Which makes sense since you are providing a nice sterile mesh for the blood. You can then leave it in the wound. But, when you have an unstoppable bleed then Celox has the edge. I carry both around with me.

I have heard of it - it was available in the UK through Amazon but it may have been from US. I’ve never seen it for sale elsewhere. I didn’t buy it but it sounds like a good idea if you are worried.

A very old established product is New Skin. Apply the gel over the cut to seal it.

That came up with American sources but it is a British product widely available from pharmacies.

I have that in my medicine cabinet - but it’s really only for minor cuts and abrasions. I’ve only used it once and wasn’t really impressed.

I purchased this and several other products to quickly stop a bleed. I have not needed it though. Probably not a bad idea just in case.
