Anyone had excessive bleeding and lump on wound site after catheter Ablation

I had my second Ablation last week and was sent home same day, but 4 days later despite doing nothing but watching tv I was still bleeding, and by bleeding I mean drips not seeping when I removed the dressing.

Anyway on Friday after discovering it was dripping down my leg and went everywhere again without me knowing I called the Brighton Cardiac Day Case Unit and asked for advice which unhelpful my was continue to apply pressure! I said that is fine, but it like to know why I’m still bleeding after 4 days.

They advised I go to my local hospital and I was seen and given the all clear and advised to keep resting for a few more days. This seemed to do the trick and the bleeding has now stopped but today I have a lump at the wound site the size of a 20p and is only detected if you push on the skin. But it’s burning and itching and I get discomfort when I move about now.

I’ve spoken to the GP and going to see them later this afternoon, but just wondered if anyone else had this and what they did or didn’t do! I’m not worried, but am looking to return to work in 6 days so was hoping I’d be feeling better by now.

I had a lump in my groin, think it was after my 1st ablation, it was about the size and length of an AAA battery. I felt convinced that some sort of tubing had been left inside. I went to my GP who said it was ok, but didn't believe him so a few days later went to A&E. Was told the same thing by them and when I eventually saw my EP for a check up I told him about it and he apologised and called it by a name which escapes me right now, might be haematoma . It was just a bit of internal bleeding from inside the wound and from what I can remember took a few weeks to disappear.

It will be interesting to hear what your EP says about it.

Hey Jean,

I think you are probably spot on, I suspect it is a haematoma but did yours feel sore and itchy. It’s rock hard, I’m lying here pressing it gently and it’s bloody hurting.

The GP I’m seeing later is new to the practice but is a former Cardiologist so we’ll see what he has to say!

No, I can't remember mine hurting at all. Though I wore maxi/midi dresses and no pants for weeks. Pants rubbing probably would have aggravated it.

Well, that settles it then! I am getting the maxi dresses out tomorrow! It’s been awhile since I’ve fitted into them ha ha.

Yes, I've been using the rolled buckwheat for around two years now. Make a muesli with it and have every morning.

If it is burning and itching I would see somebody. Leon. If just sore when you press on it this is normal. We do mention this possibilty in our fact sheet from memory.

Hey Bob,

I saw my GP earlier who is ordinarily a Cardiology Consultant so he checked me over and reckons it’s likely a haemotoma which needs a bit of time to absorb back into the body. He’s advised me that if by Monday it doesn’t show signs of improvement or worsens to call them right back and I’ll be sent for an urgent echocardiogram.

Yes, I had relatively hard lumps on both sides of my groin where they went in but both gradually went away.

Yep, I had a lump, although smaller than yours. It did reabsorb over a while, I can't remember how long though . . .

I had lumps too. Took a few weeks to disappear. No real bleeding though.

Worth getting seen if it's hot, mine didn't hurt but I had a lump for about 3-4 months which gradually went down and is now non existent. I was told a lump is normal. Hope you are OK?

I had a lump slightly larger than a golf ball. Took ages for body to reabsorb it,

but there's no sign of it now (some 20 years later !) and I only agonised about it for a few days before finding out (via Dr. Google) that it's quite common after ablation. Wish you a good recovery.
