Hi everyone just checking in it’s been 4 weeks since my ablation and after 2 weeks the skipped beats slowed down to maybe one a day, now today they have come back had about 10 today which is upsetting but still early days I know.

I really wouldn’t worry about the odd bout of ectopics, which is what you describe. They can be irritating for sure but they don’t mean your AF is about to return. I am 5 1/2 weeks post my cryo ablation and I also get occasional skipped beats. Things are still settling down for both of us. Gentle exercise, avoiding dehydration and slow and deep inhalation and exhalation have been found to help...

How are the skipped beats for you now? As I still get them

Hi Padayn, great to hear how you’re doing :)

Very glad there’s no AF - sorry about the ectopics, I know how disheartening it is when it feels like things aren’t getting better. But the great news is that 10 skipped beats in a day can feel like loads, but it’s medically speaking insignificant for anyone, let alone the fact your poor heart is still very much healing up.

Take heart and keep positive- you’re doing great :) The worst is over. And those of us yet to have our first ablation will be coming to you for advice and reassurance :) x

When your first abalation?

JaneFinn profile image
JaneFinn in reply toPadayn01

Not booked yet! I see the EP in a couple of weeks and he’s told me that’s the only option now, so I assume i’ll be on a waiting list soon :)

Are you on meds to control the AFIB at the moment?

JaneFinn profile image
JaneFinn in reply toPadayn01

I’m only on bisoprolol to try to suppress the AF (plus ramipril for blood pressure, Apixaban, and lansoprazole to protect my stomach from ulcers etc).

Unfortunately I can’t take rhythm control meds (eg flecainide) because I had an episode of VT (ventricular tachycardia) recorded when wired up once. It wasn’t caused by any meds, but apparently that rules out using rhythm meds :)

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply toJaneFinn

Does the bisraprol work? I had to come off then had some bad side effects and switched to metraprole

JaneFinn profile image
JaneFinn in reply toPadayn01

I think it does make my heartbeats more even, possibly because it certainly does slow my rate well while I’m in sinus rhythm. (I was apparently averaging well over 100 bpm in my normal life, but even with my starting dose of 1.25mg bisoprolol this came down considerably.)

However I’m not loving how it makes me feel! Can I ask what side effects did you have, and is metropolol suiting you better? X

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply toJaneFinn

Side effects I had was best way to describe it was a crushing sensation left side of chest which I thought the AFIB was kicking in but my heart rate goes up fast, the metraprole I haven’t had any of them since and I’ve been on them for over 2 months

JaneFinn profile image
JaneFinn in reply toPadayn01

Wow that’s an unpleasant side effect! That must have been so worrying. Im very glad that metoprolol is better for you :)

Awe I know o how worrying all these things are......ablation 8 months back, I’ve had quite a lot of skipped beats and two were long sessions, cardio said nothing to worry about, but of course you do whrn it’s happening dontyou....my hand goes straight on my pulse!!......I’m fact probably 64 years I never took my pulse...the last two years it’s an automatic reflex!!

Keep on getting better and don’t overdo things... listen to your body if you lack energy one day don’t push itthats what I learnt,

Sue

Wow that’s exactly how iam never check my pulse before now I constantly check it, it’s like so automatic even when I’m walking I check it getting obsessed with it

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply toMorzine

Was that your first ablation 8 months back?

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply toPadayn01

Yes in January, first one.....I’m still in tablets though he’s reduced them.....I’m in France and I sometimes don’t get all the cardio says as he talks so fast!

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply toMorzine

Was it for AF your ablation?

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply toPadayn01

Yes I’d had one big attack on holiday in Spain.may 2018, ...so was in hospital there, then got home here and had another one.....the the 24 monitor showed I had little ones I don’t know about.....so they offered me ablation, I did well in the tablets though once they settled....so had ablation January and still in reduced tablets....not sure when he will take me off tablets I think he’s keeping me in them cos I’m goung to Australia fir a long holiday but to be honest I only get to understand half of what he says...he did say happy holidays so I take that he’s not concerned!!

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply toMorzine

And since the ablation and reduced meds AF been controlled?

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply toPadayn01

Yes all controlled apart from these ectopic beats.....I get them lasting hours but low pulse...and I feel tired but that may be anxiety ..??....I told cardio and he said it was fine.....but it does make me feel very aware of them...well I’m super aware of everything to do with this heart now, yet I didn’t give it a second thought for 64 years!

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply toMorzine

Horrible those ectopic/skipped beats your anxiety just goes into overdrive with them, when you get the ectopics do you do anything like breathing slowly or you just carry on with your day?

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply toPadayn01

Well I usually go to bed early if it’s the evening.........I always try the breathing deep and slow.....I think I worry about it more than necessary.....think for all of us the shock of finding out your heart has played up with afib, it makes us worry about the slightest thing.....the ectopics I bet we never gave them a second glance if we had them back in our normal lives.....

Morzine profile image
Morzine

I would say it’s very early days for you,so don’t worry, I had times even after three months I felt I was in third gear and not top gear..... it takes longer I think than we imagine, cos we look well in the outside.....

Fully appreciate your support enjoy your trip to Australia

2.5 years post abaltion. I have good days and bad days with palpatations. Some days I have a couple all day. I'm fighting a chest infection at the moment and suffering terribly with palps, probaly running into the 100's if not 1000's per day.

People with no arythmia problems will skip several beats a day, the difference being that they don't feel them

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply to

Wow still getting palpitations after so long, did you have ablation for AFIB? was it your first ablation?

in reply toPadayn01

Ablation was for fib and flutter. It was my first and only one.

I have been in NSR since my ablation.

Ablation does not stop palpations

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply to

What do you think triggers your palpations than?

in reply toPadayn01

Stress, illness and years of abuse

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01 in reply to

Horrible palpitations, you doing lifestyle changes to try and make them better?

in reply toPadayn01

Absolutely, exercise, eat healthier, almost no alcohol, blood pressure under control, etc etc

Ectopic are benign unless frequent. They can be troublesome in ones head as the thump it gives and then the time delay for the next beat can be unnerving. Think of it like this, your heart will beat around 100,000 times per day and you get 10 Ectopics in a day, a fantastic position to be in such a short time after ablation. Your heart has a lot of healing to do . Use 3 months as the earliest time needed for things to settle down. Good luck for the future.
