Personally i would just eat oily fish once or twice a week, unless you are a veggie or vegan

I am not a big fish lover but I don’t mind tuna , it’s the mercury thing that’s got me a bit confused πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ reading up on it all , says supplements are better but have other things in them all confuses me.

Padayn01 profile image
Padayn01β€’ in reply toSam72-

Yeah the mercury thing is a big issue but it all depends where the fish get caught I believe/reading but of a hard one I do agree

Hi Sam, I tried cod liver oil (yuk) last year before my Cryoablation and found for me they made zero difference. That said if there's one thing I have learned about arthmyia conditions it is they morph differently from person to person so what's good for me won't always help someone else ..... Good luck with whatever you do πŸ‘πŸ˜‰

I think as part of a healthy diet oily fish definetly have a place, not just for heart health but general,as well as brain health I believe. There are concerns about fish from fish farming supplies, was it because of what they feed them on or disease? Cant remember (see? I need salmon!)

you could go mad trying to make sense of issues around food these days!

I am finding that a magnesium tablet shortens my episodes of rapid heartbeat. I am trying to cut down sugar as my top trigger. Good luck

I didn't think there was a "cure" for AF ? It sounds like you've had a good experience of getting your AF resolved via ablation. How long has it been since you had your ablation and I assume you've had no AF episodes since?

Hi Sam, it’s great to hear you, and CONGRATULATIONS on your 2 year post ablation anniversary!! πŸŽ‰βœ¨β€οΈ

My EP is a big fan of omega 3 fish oil supplement for warding off AF and for general heart rhythm health. He doesn’t recommend any other supplements (including magnesium!!!) but fish oil he definitely does. I’m in a quandary now I’m on anticoagulants though, as the high strength fish oil carries a blood thinning warning.

On the topic of mercury and other heavy metals, I’ve read that Krill oil is a purer way to get the omega 3 - might be worth looking into it?

I’d be interested to hear what you decide to do :) Jane xxx

It is supposed to be difficult to get all the magnesuim we need from food as fruit and veg have less magnesium than 50 years ago. This is due to intensive agriculture depleting the levels in the soil. Magnesium taurate or citrate with added taurine could be more sure than relying on food.

fairgo45 profile image
fairgo45β€’ in reply toAuriculaire

There is no harm in taking magnesium I take it as magnesium glycinate 400mg at night it helps me sleep well.

If you take too much it gives you loose bowel movements so handy if you have constipation.

It's my favorite supplement

I wouldn't take fish oil of any kind as it's likely to be stored wrongly and turn rancid so I have read

I prefer hemp oil its big here in NZ and really good for you.

I take a mixture of biglycinate and taurate but 100mg 3 times a day. Since having a colectomy my transit is very erratic and I do not want to take too much magnesium at once. I find this regime helps keep my afib at bay.

I have had my ablation procedure done 2 years ago and no AF episodes in 3 years, first and only episode was 2016 , it took one episode and they had me in and found 2 more rhythm problems , the problem I had was a side effect from my ablation procedure and coconut water and change of diet stopped that !! It was just little short bursts of what felt like SVT . But my Post here was to do with taking a supplement .

Glad to here you bounced back so quickly, what exactly type of procedure did you have done ? Everyone is different and it took me months to recover from mine , I had a cyroablation and RF in the same procedure, I couldn’t walk without my chest hurting and breathing was not helping. Its not a procedure you go into lightly as it comes with risks but like I say the procedure and outcome is different for everyone and so is the mental health care after the procedure, a lot of us have anxiety issues that is a lot harder to deal with once the problem is solved, it’s not plane sailing for all of us and it took me a good 6 months before I felt any benefit and a good 12 months before I felt free from the ectopic beats .

Hi. Not regarding fish oil. But wondering if you had permanent or paroxysmal Af? I get the feeling they don't like giving ablations if you have paroxysmal?

fairgo45 profile image
fairgo45

Lucky you but not everyone finds it that easy and personally I think there is no cure for A/F it will always come back eventually

I take omega 3 every day and seem to be ok.

I eat oily fish at least 4 times a week and take 500 mg fish oil daily. High have a "high" overall good cholesterol level but my good is higer than he bad. I actually think the cholesterol guidelines are false but whatever

I have taken omega 3 fish oil pills for 18 months without any AF episodes together with losing some weight I feel a lot better and I sleep very much better

Hi Sam, re. Fish oils, I too wonder about the wild krill oil with Astaxanthin that I take, we have cause now to ponder on the safety of ingesting anything from our polluted seas, shame on us all. Dee

I take 1or 2 1000 mg capsules of Omega 3 daily, and have been doing so for years. Dosage depends on the quality of capsules. Definitely the more expensive ones have a higher dosage of EPA and DHA, which are the active ingredients. My EP is aware, and doesn't say anything for or against. I think the warnings not to take it when you're on anticoagulants is related to the belief that Omega 3's can also have an anticoagulant effect. I'm of the opinion that it might have an effect on the cascade of coagulation, but hopefully acts on a coagulating factor different from the NOACs. Or else has only a negligible effect.

I don't know if it's good for AF, but I know that it's good for chronic inflammation. And inflammation can contribute to AF, therefore it must be good for AF?

Maybe defective reasoning, but there it is!!

fairgo45 profile image
fairgo45β€’ in reply toGeonome

You can get all the Omega 3 you need from hemp oil it's so much better as an anti inflammatory than fish oil

So the first ablation wasn't the Cure you're talking about. It only lasted 17 months.

Good to hear from you again Sam and glad to hear you are still well! I take Omega 3 (along with various other supplements) every day, have done for years and years and don't feel it has contributed to my AF in any way. But it all is very confusing, you are right! Best of luck.

Hi Sam, good to hear that you are still going well.

I take magnesium, Omega 3 and Vitamin D3 daily. Not sure how much good they are doing, but they are not doing any harm.

All the best

The fact that you had to have 2 ablations tells me you are not cured. Perhaps in remission. How many are you willing to have? 3, 4, 5 or every couple of years as long as you live.?

As for the fish oil, it is something my doctor has recommended, and like Magnesium and Vitamins C and D, I will continue to take it daily. I have gone 9 months without any A Fib, except for the one episode I triggered intentionally to prove or disprove the high carb diet hypothesis. Haven't felt this well in many, many years.

The BP meds were making me feel horrible and triggered A Fib and the Lisinopril caused Lichen Planus, which was mistaken for a skin cancer. Only a 2nd opinon from a brilliant cancer surgeon saved me from unnecessary surgery on that one. Losing the weight and lowering my BP was a Godsend.

yes, seems more like remission, not a cure

I have SVT, not A fib. But I found, at least in my case, fish oil started causing me tachycardia. Everyone is different so it may not effect you.
