Anybody ever just get periods of increased HR for 'no apparent reason'?

Hi guys, I feel I'm asking questions on here a lot more lately that makes me feel comfortable.

I've had to ask whether bloating, eating too much can caused increased HR and ectopics lately which I sort of already knew the answer to. But right now I've had 3-4 days of increased HR for no apparent reason.

Right now my HR is around 80. That's nothing to many people, I know. But my resting HR is usually around 55-65 so this is a big jump for me and it's also pounding so it's really tiring me out.

I've not had any huge meals, don't drinking caffeine, energy drinks, double brew decaffeinated tea, haven't touched alcohol in a serious way for months and I'm not eating anything particularly sugary or with loads of sweeteners (which I avoid) and it's really unsettling me now.

Anybody ever experience this, at all?

Oh yes Dave , plenty of experience of this!

My resting heart rate is about 70/80 but can shoot up to 130 ish and then settle at about 117/125 ish ( resting) when sitting minding my own business. It can stay like this for several hours. It's been doing this for many months. I'm waiting to see my EP to discuss. I'm quite used to it.

In days of yore ....about 15/ 18 months ago ....this would often herald an episode of fast persistent AF but this has not happened now for over 12 months.

I can't find any common denominator to determine why this is happening.

Yeah, it's so frustrating. Biggest one for me is that I feel as if none of this was an issue before my ablation 2 years ago.

Since then, I'm having problems cropping up quite regularly that don't make any sense! I've even eaten smaller meals, and less overall today, not taken my supplements and avoided my usual allergy meds just in case any of those have been triggering it. Nothing!

My usual rate is about 60. I can suddenly get a rate of about 100. I sit down if I can and do slow breathing in for 7 out for 11. Can slow my breaths to about 6 or 7 per minute and it drops pulse after a few minutes. Yes I can feel it but doesn't last long usually

I've been doing a lot of meditation and yoga lately and I have pre-existing breathing issues which are, as yet, un-explainable from this time last year but it just seems to have cropped up in the last week or so, almost out of nowhere! So frustrating!

Hello Dave! Il currently experiencing the same phenomenon! My resting rate is 60-66 but precious day it jump to 80-100 BPM. I took Bisoprolol. Tomorrow I'll see my cardiologist and I'll ask about it.

Thanks for your reply Lien-Ju, please let me know how your appointment goes! I'm going to book in with my family doctor for Tuesday or this week, some time.

Hello Dave, my appointment got well today. My cardiologist explained to me that during the ablation process some nerves are afflicted and the resting heart rate could take a while before return back to normal. But, if you are affected daily by this kind of trouble, then you should see your cardiologist to check if the ablation didn't make the things worse.

Yes, but I always like to find something to blame for my AF kicking off. That way I feel I can control it. My last bout of AF started on 1st August and is still going on now and I'm hoping to have a cardioversion (they always work for me). Going swimming at our local indoor pool triggered this attack. Sometimes I think we become so absorbed in what we're doing that we forget to breathe properly.

You could have something there Jean although I think we can get too involved and obsessed with our symptoms. I try to ' go with the flow'as much as I can.

This happens to me frequently. My resting HR is 70, due to pacemaker, but often it will jump to 130-40 for no apparent reason.

I suspect it is stress related because I can’t pinpoint a particular food.

Hope you are able to sort it out.

Same with me, I cut out a lot of things yesterday, went to bed last night and couldn't sleep for hours on end. So it seems like it's not food related. I thought it may have been sugar because I've been avoiding sweeteners for years now so mostly consume only real sugar but that hadn't changed anything either. Wake up today, heart is racing and pounding still!

After a successful ablation for svt, my resting HR is around 45bpm with an average of about 55bpm but will increase for no reason to 70/80 ,any exertion like a flight of stairs sends it up to 130bpm. Cardio on Weds 28th Aug & more talk of a pacemaker!

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to see my GP again too. My successful ablation in June 17 seems to have brought more problems than it originally solved. This seemingly being just one of those now.

I think maybe for me the recent hot weather & dust from the Harvest ( we live surrounded by fields) has triggered recent AF event. My HR is usually 52-55,it suddenly shot up to 120 yesterday evening, but it was only a short bout , thankfully . Felt rubbish for last few days, but thats the 1st recorded bout that I’ve had since ablation last Sept, so I’ve been lucky 🍀 Made me realise that its never really gone away. I felt SO much better for 1st few months post ablation

DaveT81 profile image
DaveT81 in reply to Alessa69

Yeah me too. Although those few months post-ablation were tricky, I genuinely felt like I could start to move forward. But after less than a year I'd started having issues again and now I'm having increased HR and regular ectopics.

Goldfish7 profile image

I've got the same plus runs of ectopics and very short episodes of 'machine gun' heart beat since my last ablation (appears to have fixed my very violent PAF though - fingers crossed). I'm really struggling with walking any distance due to chest/jaw pain and breathlessness more so on some days than others. However the heart rate increases tend to happen unrelated to eating, drinking or exercise, although some may occur after I have been too active several hours earlier (not really sure). I find it is happening often and leaving me exhausted quite often.

DaveT81 profile image
DaveT81 in reply to Goldfish7

Same with me too Goldfish, I have never had this issue before but the increased HR and ectopics are absolutely exhausting me for two reasons - 1. they're happening, and 2. they're stopping me from getting a decent night's sleep. Time to visit the GP now.

A couple of weeks have passed, did you get to discuss this with your GP? For the last few nights I've woken at 4 to 5 am with a heart rate in the high 80s to mid 90s, looks like NSR on the Kardia and usual heart rate is around 60. My ablation was done in July.

DaveT81 in reply to stagecoach

Hi, I did and because I said I had an app with CFS dept. later that week he said to just wait.

I saw the CFS team, they've referred me on to the chronic fatigue service but also want to check on my heart again. I've having a heart echo and pulmonary tests again, so will keep you posted.

For a week or so now, my heart rate had sort of calmed down. When I was rested in bed, it had gone down from high 70s/80s to mid-high 60s which I'm comfortable with. But overnight my heart rhythm has started playing up again. I did my blood pressure at home just now and at one point I felt like my heart had actually stopped. It was a little bit scary.

I wonder if hot weather affects me, my pulse has been going up to 120bpm, maybe I’m also not drinking enough water?

Alessa69 profile image
Alessa69 in reply to Eric48

Yep, it’s crucial to drink plenty of water on a a daily basis, but in these temps , I find that I really do need to up fluid intake

DaveT81 profile image
DaveT81 in reply to Eric48

Yeah I religiously drink water and reckon that the weather definitely hasn't helped me either. Weird that that's happened to me though, as I'm only 38 and didn't have any of these issues prior to ablation.

It helps me when I have racing HR to focus on my breathing, breathing gently from my abdomen, making sure I exhale (not just take deep breaths as sometimes we hear people say when trying to relax). Guided breathing meditations can slow my rate down most every time.

And for me sometimes I'm not aware of what might be effecting me emotionally, even extremely happy times and the other end of the spectrum. Yes, unexpected rapid HR is most frustrating and tiring especially when you are trying so to do your best to take care of yourself. Hope you can

I am not sure my answer is relevant but anyway here it is.

1st question are you in AFib when you see this raised HR?

So far as I can tell I am not in Afib and have not been since my Pvi cryo ablation end Jan 19. I also had an RF ablation for re-entrant Atrial flutter end Feb 2019. Not seen that either since. I have not taken any drugs since May 15 2019. Prior to AF my resting HR age 55 was around 62. This was during my last really fit (for me) period which went fro 2013 to 2015. I got afib after that time and after that hr incressed to 72 ish over a couple of years. but I was also on verapamil at that time

Then from july 2017 i was on diltiazem and flecainide. When I had the cryo ablation my hr was raised to 84 ish resting initially I then developed flutter at which point it was 140. After the flutter ablation hr was a back to mid 80s.

However I tried to get fit again after the flutter ablation and then after stopping the drugs hr went back 70/72 resting over a few months But it can vary, not frequently but not unknown. I can check my bp and I am 90 to 95 bpm when i do it. I am not in afib. I have not worried about any of this. I was told that a higher hr post ablation was a good thing for indicating ablation succes. The infrequent high resting always resolves itself so i thought so what?. I also get ectopics. They also resolve. (So far anyway) and the type duration and symptoms can be different. EP not concerned. Another strange HR increase can be when I start running. If I go off too quickly my hr can shoot up from 80 to 160/170 in as little as 40 yards. If I stop running it reduces. Then i start again and it can shoot up again. Eventually it usually settles down and I can run 6 miles no problem. I discussed this with my EP who said he is not surprised at the latter as the cryo ablation cuts out signal to the heart in order to stop the AF . It will also cut out other signals to the heart that were not part of the AF, so that may have affected some control of the heart rate..He was not concerned . Instructions are if it gets worse go back to him otherwise don't worry. So I haven't!

Sorry a bit long winded and not sure it is relevant except that I think if you take various heart pills and have none-natural procedures like cryo ablations perhaps you have to accept a bit of variability in how your heart performs afterwards. For me I am very happy overall as I don't currently have afib! The rest is minor stuff.

Hi, yeah post-ablation my HR was very high. Often in the low 90s which is very high for me. But after about 4 weeks it gradually started to lower and settled around mid 50's/60's at rest. So the brief spike over the past few weeks was alarming. Particularly as my heart rhythm has been playing up lately as well.

My HR has calmed down to a fairly 'normal' rate for me in the past week but my heart rhythm has been playing up again overnight. It often feels like my heart 'pauses' briefly when I inhale. Makes me a little light-headed sometimes.

Yeah I know what you mean. I have a pacemaker and had ablation for A Flutter April 2018 felt brill after. Resting HR 50-60 as an average but does drop to 36 at night at times but then I can be just sitting and suddenly shoots off to 100-149 bpm!! Nothing to trigger it! And my ectopics have been real bad again too a lot more recently than what I had pre ablation! I see cardiologist 4th sept and EP 19th November so just riding the storm at the minute. I also have 3 pillow Orphopnea and waking up after about 2-3 hours sleep feeling like I’m suffocating and I’m gasping for air and have to either stand next to an open window or go downstairs and stand outside!! This started in July told GP last week who sent me for some bloods so waiting on those results. It’s quite frightening I’ve not experienced this before!! The ectopics & raised HR I can cope with but not this night thing! So it seems something else is a foot!! It never seems to stop!! Ah well onwards & upwards and keep going!! I do have a positive mental attitude so I know I be fine

Hope you feel better soon it’s not nice your HR suddenly going fast for no reason!! All the best and good luck

Yes I get raised heart rate after eating my gluten free muesli breakfast. I keep calm and burp a bit then it slows down. I had proximal af which seems to have become permanent.
