Inguinal Hernia Operation with AFIB

Hi All

I had a date in August for a procedure for repair of an inguinal hernia. The hospital have put my operation on hold because of my AFI. They are too concerned about the risks involved in such an operation. On the other hand there is also a danger that my hernia might strangulate and I'd be an emergency case but due to anti coagulant (Rivaroxaban) they would not be able to operate because it would be in my system and you need two days off the tablets.

Has anyone else gone through with a hernia repair op while suffering from Afib? I get AFIB mostly once a week and use Flecainide as a pill in the pocket and Nebivolol.

I'd appreciate any feedback please.

I had a mesh repair about 6 years ago but not in AF at the time. In an out in about three hours. Longest wait was for meds as usual.

I had a hiatus hernia repair and gastric bypass in March this year. I stopped my anti coagulation drugs 2 days before and 1 day after. You just need a anaesthetist who knows you have AF.... they will be ready to sort things out.

No problems for me. Worrying not taking the drugs but it worked out!

I had an inguinal hernia operation last year.

I had to come off Warfarin for a week and to have the operation in the same hospital as my cardiac unit.

I don’t have permanent AF but I do have Paroxysmal AF.

You are right in saying that the hernia could get strangulated and this is more dangerous than AF.

Ask again.

I had Inguinal hernai repair 2015. I was on flecainide 100mg twice a day and warfarin ( which I stopped 5 days before and started ttbe following evening. They kept me overnight and I had a pressure dressing on for 24 hours. No problems.

My episodes of AF are rare though.

Hi Mikeray. I actually was diagnosed with AFib whilst having my inguinal hernia surgery. Apparently I started AFib midway through the surgery and luckily there was a cardiologist close by! All up I was very fortunate I think as I may have had it undiagnosed for a while. Good luck I am sure all will be fine.

My hernia became strangulated two days before the scheduled hernia repair and required emergency surgery and several days in the hospital. Fortunately I had stopped my anticoagulant the day before. I did not go into afib during the procedure but I did have an lengthy episode a couple of days after I got home from the hospital. My EP said it was the trauma that probably triggered it. I hope you can get your hernia surgery as soon as possible. Best wishes!

I had an inguinal hernia repair operation under a local anaesthetic in about May 2017 - it took about 40 minutes. I think I stopped Apixaban for about 2 doses. Very painful after the anaesthetic wore off but hardly surprising. Just as well that I’d had two ablations in 2015 and 2016 which eventually calmed my PAF down, as I was diagnosed with localised prostate cancer in early 2017 as well. After hormone and radiotherapy I am now in remission- but I sometimes doubt if I’d have coped with all the treatment if I hadn’t had the ablations - a moral there somewhere perhaps. Frankly I was more worried about the hernia than either the AF, stopping Apixaban for a day or so, and even the cancer. It was a relief to get it done.

You are doing well! You have a similar history to me but I did all the other way round. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in June 2016, on hormone therapy and then radiotherapy until end of Jan 2017. April 2017 diagnosed with persisten AF. NHS here appallng and no cardio in the local hospital so didn't see a cardiologist willing and able to do a cv until March 2018 - though was put on apixaban within a week and did go to see a private cardio who tried all sorts of things which didn't agree with me. He was certain he could control my AF with medication but it just didn't work and then after moving house got to see a cardio and had my cv at the end of May last year but went back into AF in April. Having my 2nd cv on Tuesday in the hopes that it will put me back into NSR long enough to have my knee replacement and recover and then going for ablation once I am fit again. Am on amioderone this time - should have been on it for 3 weeks before and I think but don't remember 6 weeks after. However, was booked in by nurse for cv exactly 3 weeks to the day I started on amioderone but my consultant was away on two weeks holiday so now going in this Tuesday when I have been on it for 6 weeks. Had two blood tests since on amioderone first OK second one done on Wednesday at GP surgery so no results yet as it was done in the afternoon and probably would not have gone to the hospital until Thursday as they pick up at 2 in the afternoons. Will get it when I go in on Tuesday morning. Never had so many bloods taken in one go before. Anyway glad to hear you are doing well on both fronts and hope you don't get another hernia - I have had two about 11 years apart. Had one repaired with the mesh which was fantastic but had to pay as they don't do that in this area - and I could have waited 18 months for the op. Second one I paid for locally but not the quick mesh insertion repair as being a mean Yorkshireman and had an overnight stay for different type of op - not such a good experience. For weeks, if not months, it felt like the hernia was still there.
