Hi on holiday abroad and a friend lost one of her daily anticoagulant tablets. She only brought enough for the holiday (yes I know). It means she will miss the last dose when she is due to fly home. She asked me it is was a problem and I didn’t know hence the post. Can she just miss one dose for a day or would that be a problem please?

Thanks in advance

So long as she doesn't take a double dose to catch up I can't see it being a problem. It's not ideal, and fairly sure all the literature on these things says not to miss a dose but it can't be helped!

I'm sure many people have forgotten/missed doses of this (and other meds) and been absolutely fine.

Not ideal but I think it shouldn’t be a problem. Lots of people have to stop taking anticoagulants if they have minor surgery or even dental work. Just pick up normal dose at usual time the next day.

That’s great I’ll let her know

P15 - does she she have her prescription with her ? I Don`t know where you have travelled to but EU countries are likely to honour it. I travel a fair bit and have not had problems yet. I always carry mine in case customs question me.

One other thing. If she still has the box take it to a pharmacist (it will have her name dose on etc). She may well be given an emergency supply to cover the dose. You`ll have to pay but it`s likely to be far cheaper than here. Don`t forget to take her passport - sometimes you need this.

Try a large pharmacist as the smaller ones often don`t keep these sort of drugs in stock - you`ll need to order them 24 hours before hand in the smaller outlets.

Best,

Paul

Thanks Paul she doesn’t have her prescription with her. I advised her to go to the pharmacy and try and get extra which think she’ll try

As flying increases the risk of a blood clot, I personally would skip a dose whilst on holiday so that I was covered for the journey home.

Yes I agree I advised her to miss the dose two to three days before flying. Thank you

Yes perhaps miss a dose when you know that you are active one day and it's not blazing hot throughout the holiday.

Also when my husband was taken into hospital earlier in the year I didn't have any tablets with me and was due for my apixaban and the hospital gave me one to keep me going. They had to admit me and discharge me, but it only took a few minutes. Presumably they could look up my records as it was local, but abroad of course I'm not sure.

Best to miss a pill during the holiday rather than before a flight (in my opinion).
