Flecainide as pip

Hi

I've been prescribed Flecainide as pip. Given instruction verbally as to dose by arrythmia nurse. 200 mg initially but can't remember how long one should wait until taking a further 100mgs. I know you shouldn't take more than 300mg in 24 hrs

Anyone here know please?

Thank you

As you may know loobylou, we are not medically trained therefore we are unable to advise on prescribed medication. It would be better if you rang your nurse for clarification. In the majority of cases, the maximum daily dose of 300 mgs is prescribed to be taken in one go so on the face of it, taking the last 100 mgs within in an hour or so if sinus rhythm has not returned, shouldn’t be a problem. However, Flecainide is a potent drug so best to contact your Arrhythmia Nurse........

Thanks Flapjack

That sounds pretty much like what she said. Will ring her for clarification

Hi hope you spoke to your A. nurse....just adding that I take as a pip and take 100 straight away..wait an hour or so see if it's done the trick if not another. Can have 300 mg..if not stopped after that I'm not sure now I come to think of it .I'd better check it out! I also take a 5 mg beta blocker as a pip if it's fast AF. Xx

Difficulty with it as a PIP is it takes normally 2 hours to enter the bloodstream and doesn't reach maximum effect till 6 hours in so its very difficult to get the dosage right for each incidence - you either take a bit more than needed or not enough.

We are all so different which is why you must be guided by the Rhythm Nurse or your EP.

My Flecainide regime is different to those who have posted a reply which proves the point.

For example I am banned from taking beta blockers as I have bad conductivity and taking Bisoprolol causes Bradycardia for me.

Thanks everyone

I've contacted my arrhythmia nurse. Waiting for her to get back to me

When I first took off like annoyed my EP had me stay in his office for four hours and I could not leave. But the interesting thing is he put it under my tongue because it has fast absorption it tastes awful but it works very quickly under my tongue. Fortunately I don’t take it anymore but that’s what happened with me. So maybe a lower dose under your tongue would be helpful. But of course you need to speak with your arrhythmia nurse or your EP

What I was trying to say is when I first took it my EP made me stay in his office for four hours. The above statement unfortunately auto corrected!

That's an interesting idea to take it under the tongue. Makes sense. I do that with homeopathic remedies, but had never heard it suggested for pharmaceuticals. Thanks for mentioning that.

I take Flecainide as PIP, but only take 100 mg. I was told that I could take more after 4 hours, but I haven't done that in a really long time because taking more tends to make the episode longer and more intense. I learned that after my EP suggested I take a bigger dose to make it stop faster and it only worsened it.

I'll chime in with others here on saying that we each seem to react and respond differently to Flecainide, so it's best to speak to your nurse.

I hope it works well for you. Don't be shy about speaking up to your nurse/doc if you have problems with it. That was the only way I could get the right dosage. The docs kept pushing doses that were too much for me.

Best wishes to you.

Thanks Nella

I had ablation for Flutter which seems to have worked. I then had an episode 6 weeks after that which turns out to be afib. Put on Bisoprolol for that. Also on

Amlodipine for BP and Apixaban. Nurse wanted me on Flecanide daily but I've opted for it as Pip as feel rubbish enough on all the others daily! I normally get a copy of gp letter within a week or two but apparently they're taking 2 moths to send out. Otherwise I would have exact instructions in black and white 😁

That should have been 2months. 2 moths might be quicker 😊
