Hi guys

I've been reading your posts for a bit now and thought I'd let you all know what's been going on with me

It all started about 12 months ago the odd palpitation here and there odd skipped beat I didn't take much notice to be honest it doesn't happen at exercise ie gym or on my bike indoors only at rest

I'm taking 8mg of canderstartan per day and 2x40mg propranolol at the min but the palps have been getting worse so my gp swapped the propranolol for verapamil 3x40mg per day

I only managed to take 2 days worth of the verapamil as i ended up in hospital AE with high pulse pounding heart to be honest I've never felt so Ill I thought I was going to die and I wouldn't say that normally it was scary as hell

I just wanted to share this with you all and ask has anyone else had a bad experience on the evil little verapamil

Phil

Hi Phil

& welcome.

No pills worked well for me in the early days, including verapamil and the only one that has since is Flecainide, but it can also give me flutter and AF.

Yes, I've had times where it felt like my heart was trying to get out of my chest and I felt sure I would die. Another time I had to fight to keep conscious while sweat poured off me, I thought that was going to be a heart attack, but no when paramedics came it was my heart racing in AF.

We understand just what heart rhythm problems are like, people who don't get them have no idea do they!

To be quite honest I dislike taking any pills, but we have no choice do we.

I was prescribed a wide range of drugs when first diagnosed with hypertension and all gave me bad side effects. I was then prescribed Verapamil slow release and apart from initial constipation I had no side effects and took it for about ten years.

Hi Phil,

I was given Verapamil in hospital in a hefty dose, twice in 12 hours in a vain attempt to chemically convert my A Flutter. My A Fib had been successfully ablated approx 7 months previously and I had come off all drugs (Bisoprolo and Digoxin) about 2 weeks prior to the A Flutter episode which laster several days. I was converted back to NSR using overdrive with my own pacemaker and discharged 2 hours later with a prescription for Verapamil which I have taken every day since. I have had no nasty side effects, unlike the Bisoprolol, and am fairly happy to stay on it for now. I am seeing a Cardiologist in 2 weeks time so I'll see what he says then butat the time of my Flutter hospital visit he was pushing Amiodorone, which I refused firmly, and his only reply was that I would need an AV Node ablation then. We'll see!

No in fact this was one of the two drugs that did not cause a side effect for me

After only one bout of afib I went on a whole litany of pills,,one after another as they all gave me intolerable side effects,,,very discouraging to go from someone who didn’t need pills to live to someone who does,,,,,verapamil made my feet swell like blimps until no shoes fit,,,,in addition to painful feet,,,cardizem brought me out of Afib in 8 hrs of IV,but the ensuing headaches were beyond reason,,,finally settled on lopressor these past 2 1/2 years with side effects that gradually subsided ,,just living with a really slow pulse and low energy levels,,,,ahhhh,,such is afib,,,,just learning to live with it,,,it could be worse,,,,,,best of luck finding what suits!
