Scary weekend

Whilst on holiday in Majorica I contracted a nasty virus which then impacted upon my AF. It ended up in me being in continuous AF for over 48 hours and my first ever visit to A&E. Dispute being very good and giving me loads of tests they didn't find the cause but instead discharged me with a prescription for beta blockers, clexaine, and anti biotic. Thinking that my cycling and running had come to an end I went to bed last night with af really bad. Halfway through a very disturbed night I was led to take an electrolytes drink and sipped it through the night. By the morning my heart had returned to NSR. Overjoyed that the nightmare weekend was over and grateful that all the chemist's were closed on Sunday so I didn't have to take those nasty drugs. I still have to recover from the virus but the message is remember electrolytes and if you think that you may be in low in them then take an electrolyte drink.

I agree that hydration and electrolyte imbalance are first line treatments - which why an A&E visit to our local hospital will often result in an IV saline drip as a matter of course if you go in with Lone AF.

Take it very easy though until you are completely clear of the virus - that will always be a trigger for me and I am unable to do any sort of exercise if I have a virus.

Great reminder chenstone. We always tell people that good hydration (and not tea or coffee ) is vital to reduce AF burden. Any sickness type virus need dioralite of similar.

Thanks for that reminder! Although I do take magnesium supplements daily, which have proved very beneficial, I shall make sure I have electrolyte drink available as well .

Sorry you had a tough holiday, how frustrating being away for a sunny break and contracting a virus with af kicking in and a trip to a and e on top of it all. Thanks for suggestion re electolyte drinks. Pleased you are safely home and back in nsr. Take it easy.
