Off for first ablation in morning at Freeman Newcastle with DR Murray, only worry I have is the sedation just hoping I don't remember much or any of it really. Hopefully letting you all know how it goes tomorrow afternoon.

I had my ablation done with Dr Murry last year. Me gave me a choice of being awake or knocked out I chose awake and Dr Murray and his team chatted away as they work. Talking me through what he was doing as he was doing it. Please dont be worried about your sedation they are a fantastic team

Does that mean you’ll be asleep? My friend is a nurse in Gynaecologist and told me not to have that op awake!! Good luck. Let us know what it’s like as I’m

Having the same soon

peterosborne profile image
peterosborne in reply to Laurashorland

Laura I was awake it isn't as bad as you may think I never had any pain meds till about 20 mins in either

CDreamer profile image
CDreamer in reply to Laurashorland

With sedation you are not awake but not really asleep either so you have some awareness but drift in and out depending upon the level of sedation. Big advantage over GA - fewer risks of complications & much quicker recovery time.

Many procedures these days are performed with a local and sedation - if requested - all that is required.

Had an ablation last April under sedation and was unaware most of the procedure. I do remember some very loud, rapid, heavy thumping in my chest for a few seconds and I heard myself say "what the bleep was that", it was not painful, just odd. Thats all I remember. It has changed my life for the better. Good luck and don't worry.

Good luck

Waiting is the worst .....

Ianp66 profile image
Ianp66 in reply to CDreamer

It is to be honest, just prolongs the wait, just trying to not think about it or I might do a runner haha

LMor profile image
LMor in reply to Ianp66

No you won’t do a runner!! Lol. I was second on the list and had mine done around half 10. Was at the hospital at 7am....the waiting game is actually the worst bit. I hope it comes around quickly for you

Ianp66 profile image
Ianp66 in reply to LMor

Sitting tight, rather get it done, had another run of afib last night woke me at 3am, likely the stress and lack of sleep. They said itl make it easier to find so hopefully a positive.

Good luck, hope the waiting is soon over and all goes well. I’ve got AF but it’s intermittent, although I do seem to be getting periods of it more often , so ablation op never been suggested. It was Dr Murray who diagnosed me with AF at Hexham hospital and prescribed me appropriate meds to take etc.

Ianp66 profile image
Ianp66

I was the same 5 years ago, 1-2 episodes a year, then moved onto 4/5 etc, meds don't do much for me really the flecanide stopped working so this was the next option.

CANCELLED, seemingly after the first patient down had complications they just sent me home, worn out, totally exhausted , can't believe it 😔

LMor profile image
LMor in reply to Ianp66

Omg I am so sorry...please remember that everything happens for a reason and it wasn’t meant to be today. I feel so much for you after all the worry you’ve been through...

Ianp66 profile image
Ianp66 in reply to LMor

Happens I suppose , guess some poor soul didn't have a clear run at it this morning, at least DR Murray puts care before numbers, think it's just with an hours sleep at best on me , afib through the night last night , then a 5am start with 7hr wait to be cancelled , I feel totally exhausted, wiped out lol , going to shower and bed for an hour, or it's goong to set afib off again, wasnt that impressed on ward, old Guy complained he got ignored last night for water, and I saw one nurse in my area all day, loads of staff congregating at the nurses station and on the way out them having a complain about 20 cases through tomorrow, asked if I should have an apixaban as I hadn't had one since yesterday morning, followed by glazed look, so I just took it myself, not impressed at that to be honest.

LMor profile image
LMor in reply to Ianp66

Oh that sounds awful. I felt like that when I first arrived at the hospital. Was very much like a cattle market, but the staff after the initial booking in were amazing and very professional and caring. Yes it’s more than you could ask for to be put first so they are doing everything the correct way. It just is hard on the ones (you) the other side. Get some sleep if u can and then if you feel up to it, maybe a nice meal out with the Mrs

Oh nooo, am SO so sorry! Incredibly bad bad luck, but as someone else said, not meant to be today, for whatever reason. Try to be calm, don’t let the stress& worry undermine you. It will get done and the time will be the right time. Must have been a major issue to throw everyone out. Positive prayers for you 💗

Oh no, I’m sorry to hear your procedure has been put off. It’s quite the mental and physical ordeal to prepare yourself for it. Be good to yourself, rest and take some time to reset your mind. Hope they prioritize your rescheduled procedure given that they bumped you at the last minute!

Ianp66 profile image

Ianp66

Thanks all for the amazing support and lovely messages, got postponed, but hopefully Friday go again. Off to sleep thanks all x

Sounds very stressful- a big build up then... cancelled. Hope they manage to do the procedure on Friday.

Not even a phone call today so left totally in Limbo, called the secretary and no answer, not a good feeling really, at least expected a call today after what ward staff said when I left yesterday, not the best communication so far.

in reply to Ianp66

The failure to contact you and the lack of medical advice ion the anticoagulant seems to me to amount to bad-indeed possibly dangerous-practice. If you cannot get through to the office today I would suggest a ringing a manager at the hospital to point this out to them.

Hi Ian,

Any update on your new procedure date? Betty and I both had our ablations on Friday and they went very well. Soon, you’ll have your date and this will be behind you! Thinking of you and wishing you all the best.

Great, glad to hear glad it went well that's good news 👍. No not a thing since the sending home , see what happens this week, communication has been appalling really. Doesn't instill confidence at all when you don't even get a phone call, email or letter,
