Upped my bisoprolol

Hi all,

I’ve noticed the cardio that did my ablation has sent me home with a renewed prescription for my drugs....says I should take them for two months and then see my own cardio here.....well he’s upped the bisoprolol from my normal 1.25 to 2.5.....

Anyone know why that should be? I didn’t do too well with that dose initially last year and my cardio dropped it to 1.25 and I was fine......I got headaches and now I’ve got day three of headache I’m not sure if it’s the ablation headache or this bisoprolol......

Thanks , sue

Hi Sue, I would have that conversation with your cardiologist and see if dropping back to 1.25 is acceptable to him/her. The dosage may have been increased due to the expected side effects of the ablation.

It sounds like you don't tolerate bisoprolol very well, I was on 10mg per day before my ablation and was feeling fine but we are all different and we all know our bodies better than anyone. I have reduced my flecainide in the past as a lower dosage than recommend worked better for me, saying that I would advise others to take professional advice only as I am not trained. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.

Best wishes

Dave.

Thanks Dave, yes on reflection maybe it’s to keep my heart as calm as it can....I’m talking to my cardio here Monday...

I know that many EPs like the heart to heal in peace and quiet which is why he has done this I suspect. I also guess that he was not aware of your past problems with bisoprolol so maybe best to speak to your general cardiologist as has been suggested.

Thanks bob I’m talking Monday to him, and yes maybe it was to keep my BP lower and peaceful, makes sense

Sue

Difficult to know whether it’s the Bisoprolol or the ablation but I would persevere with the increased dose because the EP will have probably prescribed it for the reasons explained by BobD. Heart rates tend to elevate after an ablation so there may be good medical reasons for the short term increase.

Bisoprolol affects your background. I was once put on 3.5 and had bad side effects so it was lowered to 2.5 and I'm fine. Go back and get it reduced if your suffering

I was still on Bisoprolol and Flecinide after my Ablation until I had my 3 month check with the EP and as I had had no AF he was then happy for me to stop all heart meds except the Rivaroxiban as at my age 65 he said it would sensible to carry on taking them for life and as I have had no side effects with them I'm happy to continue with them.

I think that will be me too......

I am most surprised that anyone would double a bisoprolol dosage for no reason. The lowest dose is too much for me to take regularly and I now only take it if my occasional AF episodes are over 140 over 20 minutes after taking flecainide or if they wake me in the night and I want to get back to sleep! Of course we are all different and the best of luck with managing yours!
