Hi,

What I am unsure of is whether your vagal nerve was troublesome before or after your ablation ?

So, I'll continue ... I have no hernia, as well as never having an ablation or for that matter a cardioversion.

Nevertheless my AF was always triggered by food, and on one occasion only by sleeping on my left side. Back in the day I consulted a nutritionist. Acting on her advice I changed my diet ( or food intake) over time and with the exception of the sleeping incident in February 2018, I have had no AF since April 2015.

I tend to eat small portions and eat early ish in the evening. I try and stay gluten, wheat and oats free.

But the nutrition/diet thing is very much an individual process.

Sadly, I can't answer your question and I doubt anyone can but this nutrition thing can be a good start - the objective is to calm the VN. By calming the VN, by minimising any aggravation and or inflammation you have a good chance of calming the heart.

I think Carneuny has said a lot about vagal AF but remember that the vagal nerve is only one part of a very complex Autonomic system and although you can do things to improve your vagal tone with some success, it doesn’t calm down on its own. Age will also be a factor.

Things other than foods which will negatively affect ANS are stress, sleep or lack of, pathogens - virus & infections, emotional distress and trauma.

Unfortunately it won’t settle on its own I found, you have be an active agent in your recovery. There are things you can do to help calm the AN and the things I have found have helped are:-

Eliminating all added sugar/sweetness

Although I stopped all alcohol, wheat, caffeine for over a year - I can now tolerate small amounts of all as long as I practise the following every single day.

Fasting for at least 12 hours in every 24

Eating at least 3 types of unpasteurized fermented foods - at least one daily

Slow breathing techniques and practising relaxation/meditation

Exercise - Pilates particularly helped me - but anything that teaches breathing techniques such as singing in a choir or yoga which relies on strength into core muscles.

Cold water swimming or taking a cold shower daily (you can graduate from warm to cool to cold)

Using a power breather.

There is a small E book called How to soothe your Vagal Nerve on Kindle or several books which I haven’t yet read but looks interesting on Amazon or look at

blog.bulletproof.com/vagus-...

All seem to say very similar things but not they ALL focus on breath exercises at some time. It always comes back to the breath and how we breathe.
