Spanish survey regarding heart disease and exercise

The University Hospital A Coruna in Spain have published a report that indicates that your heart condition can be checked from your ability to walk up four flights of stairs. If your heart is fit and healthy, you will be able to do the steps on the stairs for a minute nonstop or use a treadmill set in an incline

If you can do it, it indicates that your heart function is still in good condition. If you fail, you have to increase your activity levels. "Physical activity has a positive effect on blood pressure and fat, reducing inflammation and increasing the immune system against tumors" said Dr. Jesus Peteiro who led the research.

In this study, Dr. Peterio involved 12,615 volunteers with suspected coronary artery disease.

My father, who died at 90, was extremely active until the last year of his life. If the weather was so bad he couldn’t get out for his long walks and hikes, he used to run up and down the stairs in their house half a dozen times. When out walking, he used to hold his breath for five to 10 seconds every second breath. We all used to chuckle - not now!

Glad to hear he had a long and active life. I haven't heard of the practice of holding your breath for five to ten seconds every second breath - did he say what his thinking was?

Just remembered it more accurately - he held his breath for ten seconds, then breathed, then held for 10 seconds and so on. He said he was exercising his lungs and heart.

Interesting. Will give it a try when I can find enough steps.
