Recently diagnosed with paroxymal af and am taking bisoprolol 2.5 mg. I can't take anti coagulants as I have von willebrands disease, which is a blood clotting disorder. Does anyone else have this and what might be other options to mitigate stroke risk? I have yet to be seen by the arrythmia clinic.

There is a procedure which can close off the section of the heart where the blood tends to pool. I am not knowledgeable about it but at least one of our members have had it so can be more helpful. I just wanted to let you know there is an answer 😃
Thank you for the info. I think this must be the LAA occlusion I have read about.
Hi B172. I had the LAA occlusion with a Watchman device fitted this past January. Doing well. Please feel free to PM me anytime and I will share any info that might help. Just don't want to make everyone read my posts as I probably posted so much and so often about it people's eyes may be starting to glaze over. I'm in the US where Watchman's are more common. Happy I did it and tho I rarely drink anymore had a glass of champagne when I swallowed my last warfarin tablet. LOL irina
Hi Irina, I have sent you a PM - bit too long probably!
I got it and want to answer in depth. Yours was not too long. Some of my posts rival War and Peace. LOL. I tend to be lengthy myself. Going out so usually answer my PM's in the evening so you'll probably get it tomorrow. Take care. irina
Hi B172 Just read your post about Von Willebrand's. Since anticoagulants lengthen clotting time and VW does this already I would be interested to know does your doc check your PT/PTT and INR to find out exactly where you are numbers wise on the clotting scale. irina
'Stroke risk reduction' - try doing a search (little magnifying glass top right) with this quote and you should find an interesting post.
Watchman Device...one solution. There are other devices as well that close off the left atrial "tag"...I forgot the name at the moment, but it is responsible for the clot formations. Left atrial appendage.....there...finally came to me. It can also be surgically removed. It is what I would go for if I could...had two episodes of lobe afib more than a decade ago....nothing since.
Hi B172. I am sorry to hear that you have an additional health problem to your AF. As one who also has a blood clotting disorder (although at the opposite end to you) I would get an appointment with my haematologist and get all the info you need from him/her. You need as much support with your VW as you do with your AF. Take care. Anne
Hi annel, Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I am lined up for a telephone consultation with my Haematologist at the beginning of August. I have never had any problem with bleeding and, in fact, I did not know I had this until my grandson was diagnosed about 10 years ago. The family were subsequently tested and I drew the short straw. Normally, in my case, anticoagulants would be a no no but as I haven't displayed any of the usual symptoms some more tests are being run before a definitive decision is made. However, it is looking unlikely that I can take that route hence my doing some research and receiving some very helpful information from other forum members about alternatives. At least I shall be armed with some information when I actually get to see a health care professional.
