A timely reminder

I had a coffee (decaf of course) with a long time client of mine yesterday. I said I'd been to the cardiologist and needed another procedure. He asked if I was having a stent put in so I said "the plumbing is fine, it's the electrical system that is not working properly". He then told me that his first wife had died of an electrical problem when she was 36. She had been diagnosed at 17 with Woolf-Parkinson White syndrome, was under a cardiologist and he said that she could have a procedure or keep managing it as she was. They had 3 young kids and she'd been okay for nearly 20 years so choose the latter option. Unfortunately one morning she went into cardiac arrest and died. We are often told these things are rarely fatal, however sometimes it is fatal so we must ensure we do what we can. Interestingly the oldest son who was about 7 when his mum died recently graduated from medical school.

WPW is quite a different arrhythmia from AF. In simple terms there is a direct extra link from upper to lower chambers which causes the ventricle to beat twice as fast as the atrium with understandable results. Yes that condition can be fatal if not treated

AF alone seldom if ever is.
