Hi All,

Hope you are all enjoying the spell of wonderful weather here in the UK. Having my 1st Ablation on Thursday 24th and would be grateful for any tips as to what to include for an overnight stay. I feel I may have over done it with three fully packed suit cases, and now having to hire a Truck....

Putting my daft Irish humour aside I would welcome any useful tips.

Mo

Just about to go out Maureen, but I’m sure you will get lots of good advice. If you haven’t, I will respond later.....good luck for Thursday

Maureen, if you go into the AF Association web page, click on the patients section, then click on Patients Resources. Then click on the "Factsheets box. Scroll down and you will find 2 factsheets which you should find helpful:

1. Preparing for an Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation

2. Recovering from an Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation

A little light reading for a Sunday afternoon.....please keep us in informed of how your get on Thursday.....best wishes, John

Hi Mo, sorry I have no advice as it’s not something I’ve done. (For sure if it were me, I’d be packing enough for a month, but probably nothing I actually needed!) Hope you get some good advice from those who’ve had an ablation - and from flapjack’s excellent links. But I just wanted to send you massive best wishes for Thursday. Do let us know how you get on :) J x

Hi Mo! I've had 3 hospital stays with my ablations so here goes ! Normally I would have 3 suit cases as well but you just have to rein yourself in.....Usual toiletries, dressing gown, slippers , nightdress or PJ s, reading material, probably some lipsalve as lips tend to get very dried out if the procedure is lengthy. I think its a good idea to have some soft cotton underwear to avoid pressure and absorb any leakage from the entry points in the groin......doesn't have to be ' granny pants but who cares in this situation!

Also leave plenty of room in your bag to put the clothes you arrive in after you have been gowned up.

Oh you might want to take some disposable knicks with you to wear on your trip to theatre. ..modesty purposes but some people don't care...You may be supplied with these but not necessarily. You will find these in the maternity dept of Boots or Tesco etc

Wishing you well

Sandra

I've had 4 ablations and all have been slightly different for me. If you trawl through my past posts there has been an account of every one (2014x2 and 2017x2) if that helps :)

Some baggy leggings or track suit bottoms to go home in, to avoid any pressure on the groin area where the catheter has been. I found these useful for some days afterwards, particularly as my usual garb is fitted jeans!

Good luck, I’ve had one ablation which so far has kept the dreaded episodes away for over a year.

All the best Mo had mine done on the 2nd of May and so far so good, I took too much in my bag, couldn't get the clothes I was wearing in the bag so had fetching green plastic bag given me, remember loose clothing for after the procedure.

Hi Mo,

In addition to all that has been said, take a bottle of water as you have to lie flat for some time afterwards so cannot sit up to drink.

Good luck!

I brought my own blanket and was so glad I did! Hospital blankets are terrible. I also brought my own nightgown and my IPad.

For everyone else who is similarly struggling to navigate this chaotic website, here's the link to the 'factsheets':

Had my ablation on 20th March. So far so good. Loose clothing for coming home. Reading material and a bottle of water. Remember to take it easy and then even easier after the procedure. Good luck.

The most comfy clothes you own, flat shoes, something to pull your hair up if need be. Maybe your favorite pillow. Post surgery flat on your back for 5 hours. Sleep or meditate as much as you can. It's all about resting.Best to you. Post ablation Jan 31, 2018
