Interesting post of yours Sam.

I had to stop eating cake, as every time I did I would become aware of my heart thumping. I don't know whether it was the sugar or the gluten, but am now gluten free. I can still eat sweets with no problem, chocolate I'm not too sure of at the moment but rarely eat it anyway (too busy eating the sweets).

I'm always reading that we should avoid sugar and now your post has given me the push to do so.

Thank you.

Jean

I have to be careful of foods with raising agent, such as scones, causing bloating which upsets my HB. I sometimes wonder if people blame gluten when baking powder and yeast are affecting them.

That's an interesting point Buffafly, especially as I can eat biscuits with no problems.

Fiendishly difficult to sort out what exactly is causing gut/heart rhythm problems πŸ‘Ώ

I have cut down on all four mentioned above by about two thirds or more and I am not too bothered which one or more is helping as no downside. I do think it important not to exclude these completely as your body will react more adversely if by accident you have some when out and therefore I would find it too restricting on lifestyle.

Very interesting Sam. Thanks for the information, I had never heard that sugar can cause inflammation of the atrium.

Where did you read that?

I have often thought that the sugar rush was not good for my heart.

It didn’t help yesterday when I eat what was a relatively small slice of the chocolate cake that my wife had made for one of my grandchildren’s birthdays.

Trouble is that I am super sensitive to my heart beat.

Really good and interesting to hear first hand from one who has reaped the benefits. Given me motivation as well.

There are many publications out for sugar free living but one which I have found a very good read is by journalist Nicole Mowbray titled Sweet Nothing

Absolutely Sam! I have an autoimmune disease - managing inflammation is crucial in treating autoimmune - I came to the same conclusion BUT - dark chocolate is OK - has to be at least 70% and no milk chocolate or white chocolate 🍫 and in moderation - my motto is β€˜chocolate will make it better’ and it does! But in moderation - a couple of squares a day.

Very, very well done you! Not easy to kick the sugar rush. x

Hi Sam

Nice one,I try to keep clear of sugars and Saturated fats,I don't worry as much about lipids,

Just remember that if a food claims to be sugar free(it's probably loaded with fat and visa versa,

Look for unprocessed foods which are free from both although it's sometimes hard to find something that tastes nice lol

Keep it up my friend

All my best wishes

Matt x

I tested myself last night with chocolate and biscuits and am paying for it today mate , had a mini run of fast pulse and a few ectopic beats and basically feel like crap πŸ’©. It’s proved a point to me now . I have been doing ok πŸ‘πŸΌ them ectopic beats we’re going to a point I wasn’t having any for a full day that’s good for me lol πŸ˜‚ πŸ‘πŸΌ how are you ?

Agree completely about sugar and arrhythmias. I didn’t know about inflammation of the atria - which perhaps explains its effect on heart rhythm. If I eat even a moderate amount of sweet stuff, I pay the price with ectopics and racing.

Very interesting Sam.

I seen it on YouTube about sugar and the things it does to are Hart , it’s an inflammatory so gets to all the other organs to . I also remember seeing a documentary about Henry the 8th and how the sweet stuff made him ill and probably contributed to his death . O and the women lol πŸ˜‚

Sugar sets off more light bulbs in the brain than both heroin and cocaine put together it is also more addictive, sugar also contributes to the grow of bad bacteria and yeast in the body......in some quarters it is considered to be a poison.

I agree with you, and I tested myself last night as I ate 2 pieces of chocolate an 2 biscuits and low and behold I woke this morning with ectopic beats and had a mini run of fast heart beats about an hour ago , it’s not worth the stress to me on my heart so I will kick it for good now . πŸ‘πŸΌ

Sugar affects the nerves apparently. Diabetics are the main focus. Maybe the sugar is affecting the parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves that control the heart and that is why the heart misbehaves. Correcting nerve damage early is important. Some people are closer to being diabetics than others and this could be why some are more affected than others. Look at this website: health.clevelandclinic.org/...

This was a very timely message. Yesterday I skipped breakfast, something I never do, I had a sandwich lunch while travelling and ate a chocolate cream Easter egg before dinner when I got home. The egg gave me a sugar rush. I felt shaky and unwell for about an hour and my heart was all over the place.

Luckily I don’t have a particularly sweet tooth and wouldn’t be at all upset if chocolate was abolished. I will be eating my remaining Easter egg in very small doses and only when I am in my normal dietary pattern.

My daughter says it is very noticeable how my grandson's behaviour changes if he has a sugar binge, very overexcited!

Hi Sam. Great post and lots of interesting information in the responses too. I am now all enthused to try cutting out sugar but just wanted to ask - is this all sugars or just added/processed sugar? Wondering whether this would include fresh fruit πŸ‰ as well?

And congrats on kicking the sugar habit - not easy as I’m sure I’ll find out (lol) but sounds like worth the effort and good for my ❀️

Don't know about heart but fruit sugar does affect diabetes, my friend went on a cruise and tucked into the cabin fruit bowl, came home to a diagnosis of diabetes πŸ™„

Thanks. I will limit fruit as well. Maybe just 1 portion per day and replace with veg.

Hi liz , I just cut out sweet things , chocolate, biscuits, I don’t have anything sugar free as they can have a load of crap in them . I still have natural sugar, I have a orange every morning but no banana. I don’t drink tea or coffee so no problem there . It’s impossible to stop all sugar as it’s in a lot of things but it’s mainly the sweet stuff I have kicked x

Well done Sam, when first diagnosed with AF 3 years ago, I changed my diet completely and became sugar and gluten free, felt lousy for a few days suffering from withdrawal symptoms and then suddenly, I felt amazingly well, better than I had in years. However, I fell off the wagon a few months back and am now back in sugar addiction mode which is not good....but your comment has given me the kick in the pants I needed so as of today - back to sugar and gluten free - thank you!

Interesting, also alcohol contains sugar I believe or acts in the same way?

Sam72- profile image
Sam72-β€’ in reply towilsond

Yes it does , I still have the odd tipple πŸ‘πŸΌbut drink a lot of water afterwards. I think alcohol makes us more dehydrated than the sugar depending on what drink we like .
