Thank you for this as it's most definitely put my mind at rest. Only yesterday whilst in an episode of AF this very question entered my head while I was trying to use breathing exercises to get through it all. Thank you, your videos help to take away some of the fears.

I’m very worried as I have to stop taking my dabigatran for 2 days because I have to have a colonoscopy. I’m in permanent AF so wondering if I’m going to have a stroke

For what it is worth I too had to have a colonoscopy while in permanent AF and was on Eliquis which I had to stop and was worried about it but luckily I got through it OK.

I believe the blood thinners more or less reduce the risk of stroke of AF sufferers to the risk which the general poplulation has. Without blood thinners I think AF patients have something like a 6% greater chance of risk than those without. I don’t think therefore you should worry too much about 2 days without. As I said I believe the above to be the case.

Anyway good luck with the colonoscopy. Not pleasant but it is a good thing to have done.

Presumably there are some statistics about actually being in AF increasing your stroke risk, otherwise why would someone who's been in AF for more than 48 hours need to be anti-coagulated for a month before being cardioverted?
