Hi, Has anyone on Apixaban had a dental implant and what precautions were taken by the Dentist? Were there any other factors to consider for people with AF/Flutter. Thanks. TerryW

I had an implant some 10+ Year ago but wasn’t on ACs at the time, but I did have AF. It was quite a long process I remember, done in various stages. I had to be very still for a long time when they fixed the post in so the most important thing was that.

As gum disease is linked to heart disease - good general dental hygiene is essential so keeping it clean and treating it like one of your own.

As far as Apixaban is concerned - obviously you should discuss with your dentist about that. There shouldn’t be any problems but you may be asked to stop one or two doses prior to the treatment and/or consult your doctor.

Personally I cannot tolerate adrenaline in any of the local anaesthetics So you may want to discuss with your dentist. I rather suspect it is people with vagal induced AF/AFL who tend to react to this but discuss with your dentist,

Hope it goes well, I am very please with mine.

Thanks for that CDreamer. I am guessing that technolgy has moved on in 10 years, and it is good news for me that you are pleased with the result. I have no option about having the tooth out (its a big one at the upper side), but I now know that the initial 'base' is screwed into my jaw bone. Still I think that this is the only way that the Dentist will achieve the objective that I have set her of my teeth outlasting, (even if artificial), me! TerryW

Hello i had a surgical tooth extraction last week wich involved cutting the gums and sutures. I am on Apixaban but my very good Dentist said that current guidelines dont indicate the need to stop Apixaban. I only bled minimally. The only thing he did say that as i have Afib although now under control i need to have adrenalin free local aneasthetic as the adrenalin can have an effect on the heart. Hope this is of some help.

Stephanie. Thanks for replying and the information. My Dental Surgery would send me to the local Hospital for the extraction, or it would be done privately if an implant. I need to understand better why the Hospital, but twisted roots were mentioned. I am grateful for the prompt! TerryW.

I had an implant last year, I haveAF & was then on warfarin, I am now on Apixaban, my Dentist was very careful. I had an INR the day prior to surgery, the surgery was done in stages & I felt very safe at all times

sueallen. Thank you for the reassuring reply. I have read up on the procedure and I have sent an e mail with questions about the extraction and why a bridge is not feasible to my Dentist. She has already given me a leaflet from the Dental Centre that they recommend and the Centre does look highly competent and expensive! Terry

I had a dental implant 2 years ago. Dentist said not to stop the Apixiban because of my A Fib and I had non- adrenalin anaesthetic. The first session , when the screw was placed in my jaw, was over quite quickly and was not uncomfortable. I had one or two small stitches in the wound and didn't have any bleeding to speak of. Dental nurse checked up on me by phone later in the day to see how I was. I hope everything goes well for you.
