I have proximal a-fib. On flecanide. Haven't had an episode in 2 years and I ALWAYS know when I do. Doc says ok NOT to be on blood thinners. I keep blood thinner with me as a pip to use IF an incident occurs. Has anyone received similar advice?

The consensus answer to PIP AC when you posted a year ago was that it did not confer adequate protection. That said other posters have received the advice you were given. Hopefully they will reply with the rationale of the Cardio for stopping regularAC.
Could you remind us of your CHA2DS2Vasc score?

Not something I would do. I didn't have AF for nine years after my ablation but still take anticoagulant. How do you know that you don't have events? Many people have them at night and are unaware,
I am 62, CHADS 0, no AF for 4 years with lots of Lifestyle improvements (diet, supplements, exercise, reduced stress )and I got the same advice from my cardio.
Never heard of using Anti coagulant as a pip.Take my advice, get on Anti coagulants asap.I was in similar situation to yourself, then had a TIA out of the blue and now got Atrial flutter as well as AFib.
