Alcohol and SVT

My mother-in-law arrived from the uk 2 days ago and is staying with us for Christmas. On the day she arrived, we drank 3 bottles of red wine between us. I woke up yesterday with my heart going erratic and pain in my chest. Feeling very off still, I've been in bed for 2 days! Alcohol is my culprit!!

Same here, so went tee-total 5 years ago. Now drinking anything would be even worse, because I'd be drunk on half a glass of wine. Did it once by mistake.

I need to be careful with alcohol as well, it is a known antagonist. Find a soft drink that looks as though you are having a drink so that you feel as though you can part of the party.

Hope you feel better soon.

I can get away with one glass of wine - I think! Usually avoid it totally now as too scared in case it triggers AF. Trouble is I'm staying at my daughters over Christmas and I know they will be pushing different drinks at me as it's very much a part of their life. Makes me feel like a right party pooper! Sigh!

Did someone say it's sulphites in the wine that triggers AF? Perhaps I could try some without. Any recommedations?

I can have one or two and feel fine but anymore and that's me done!! I try to drink lots of water which helps but totally forgot the other night! It was just so lovely to see the family....

Personally, I wouldn't drink any alcohol for fear of triggering BUT I hadn't had an alcoholic beverage in 16 years and still had my first Afib spell 3 months ago. My Cardiologist has been treating for 30+ years and he said truthfully what triggers one episode may not the next time. It's a very confusing condition and it's aggravating when your doing everything right and still have an episode.

Enjoy your family time this season and I am beginning to think eliminating is not as necessary as moderation. Who knows...

moderation is the key, i drink red wine but not a lot, i used to blame everything as a trigger, bending over to do the gardening set it off, eating certain foods set it off, getting anxious set it off, drinking wine set it off, lifting anything heavy etc etc , no as someone on here said what sets it off is random, nothing in particular just live your life doing things in moderation

I can't drink wine at all, but have found a weak gin and tonic I can enjoy, but only do so very occasionally.

Hi there, know what you mean! Whenever I socialise I take a bottle of chilled sparkling non-alcoholic wine, looks like a champagne bottle! They can be really nice, either white or pink from most supermarkets, although haven’t seen one in Morrisons, only the still. Asda is my favourite, a precocious little pink sparkling wine, worth drinking but without the obvious side effects for us Afibers. I’m even taking one on Christmas Day to the local pub where the family will be having lunch - pubs and restaurants seem quite happy for us to take our own if they cant provide it themselves. Good luck and Happy Christmas and Healthy New Year. Dorothy

I too stick to one glass, only occasionally two.

I know that if I were to drink more I can feel my heart pounding faster and harder and I prefer not to poke my sleeping monster!

Rather than thinking alcohol is the cause, I think alcohol is just an antagonist. Our AF or other arrhythmia’s errant pathways are only sleeping waiting to get prodded by something that excites the heart.

All the usual culprits, Adrenalin, full stomachs, alcohol, extreme exercise etc would give anyone an increased heart rate but those of us with the errant pathways risk ‘waking them up’.

It’s such a shame as I would so like to get tipsy occasionally 🙁

Red wine is supposed to be the worst of the worst isn't it? That's why when I last went out I only had 3 bottles of white wine.

I have heard just the opposite -- that white wine has more sugar and is more likely to cause AF.

I do think for me at least moderation is far more liveable with than going down the tea total route. I enjoy a couple of small brandys on Saturday and Sunday evenings....and up to now its not caysing me any difficulties....i suppose the old saying" a bit of what you fancy does you good" is not far off the mark. Merry Christmas Hic!!

I would be very wary of blaming the wine after only the one episode. There was a saying that started, I think, in the first war, once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action! Now there's a good excuse to go out and buy three more bottles of the good stuff.

They call that Holiday Heart😥! Had third ablation this year. Feel great. Heart purring at 60 resting. I love my red wine but Hadn’t had drop of any liquor in 6 months. Will never drink again..

i stopped drinking any alcohol after an ablation , i went six months without a drop and guess what it started off again with total abstinence , i thought well its not the wine then so started drinking a glass or two of red , it is not my trigger

Also I’ve been drinking nonalcoholic beer which when t’s very cold taste like regular beer. The best thing about this whole situation of not drinking is being able to drive at night. Last night was at the Christmas party drove home no worries of getting pulled over. Unfortunately they have not come up with a nonalcoholic wine tha tastes any better than grape juice. for me now it’s not worth drinking again. after my third ablation and I think they finally got it being my heart is perfect. So I’m done drinking.😪

I can take 2-3beers but also drink lots of water after drinking alcohol. Dehydration can be a problem.

Hi there , I no what you mean, I found this out over the years and didn’t no I had any heart problems just thought it was bad anxiety .

White wine , cider , shots of any kind red wine and the very worst was Rosey wine 😩💔 could not tolerate it and would wake up the next day with my heart jumping and bumping around my chest . I tryed Guinness and black and was ok with it . I have the rule to not drink to much and get 2 bottles of water in before bed and the day after drink loads of water. However I find caffeine to be my main culprit, one cup of coffee would send my heart palpitations off . I also found that every one is very different , sometimes food can start me off . What I found very strange is on my discharge form after my ablation procedure? It said no alcohol for at least 48 hours 🤔😂🤦🏼‍♀️ lol .
