Recently been told via letter post ECHO I have moderate mitral valve regurgitation, right dilated atrium and thickening on my septum patch. Would you expect any treatment!

Probably not. Most people have some amount of mitral valve regurgitation and the amount tends to be quite subjective by the operator. So for example trace could also be mild etc. That is what I was told by my consultant and I believe also by Dr Gupta in one of his posts explaining ECHO results. You could search this top right and see what is about.

Hi I had the same problem from the age of 17 yrs due to rheumatic fever I got to 72 and then developed AF so was put on beta blockers and warfarin which kept me going for four years then an angiogram showed the valve was more severe I have now had a valve repair and feel much better.

I was diagnosed with the same at 25, and didn't have an (unrelated) heart attack until I was 54, then AF at 58. I suspect they'll just ask you to have 5 yearly scans to check it's not getting worse.

Thanks I've had AF for number of years and a benign tumour removed from my heart now 99% reliant on a pacemaker. Just didn't want anything else cardiac really

I have moderate COPD, not self inflicted - never smoked, and recent Echo showed leaking of tricuspid and mitral valves and general signs of heart failure probably caused by the lung problems. Consultant has written me off, no follow up offered . Maybe because I am ninety next March he said there was nothing he could do and should not expect any improvement. I feel abandoned with extreme breathlessness and lack of energy which mean QOL is very low. Really not worth going on.

Should I be seeking private help and if so how do I find lung/heart specialist? Preferably near Oxford,

I also have non symptomatic AF, a pacemaker for heart block, and am taking Apixaban, Furosimide and an inhaler.

Feeling guilty asking for help when I have already reached great age but need hope of a future of some value as my skeleton and brain still working OK. Grateful for any advice.

Never any harm asking for a second opinion. Is your Gp not helpful? Do you have a heart failure nurse in your area. Maybe symptoms can be alleviated even if not cuarable. Your a grand age but doesn't mean you should be written off. Please don't give in

Thanks for encouragement. No nurse support here and GP great on empathy but overworked and I think covering too wide a subject remit. Doesn't seem to know what to recommend when I asked about second opinion.

Ask them to refer you to another cardiologist. Sorry no nurse support sometimes just support helps
