Sleeping with af
I could only ever sleep on my right side, or at least start on my right. Sometimes I was OK on my back but never on my left. I found avoiding alcohol altogether in the evening helped me a lot.
Did you ever get that breathing thing and waking up all the time and slight tightening pains in top of your chest
I used to get slight pains high in the chest. After a long time I reckoned it was eating that was the problem. I now only eat small meals but more often and never fill myself up or anywhere near it. Not had any issues since doing that.
I'v not had the breathing issue.
Hopefully you'll get more useful replies soon and get to the bottom of it. It's a pain not being able to sleep through the night.
Thank you koll
Thanks.x
I wonder if it is your consciousness waking you up which could do for several reason, one of which is position which triggers vagal nerve and the other suggestion would be stopping breathing - which is what happens widen you have sleep apnea.
Have you ever had a sleep study?
No I haven't how do I go about getting one please
Go see your GP, explain the problem and ask for a referral to your local sleep clinic.
It usually means fitting you up with a monitor which mesasures your O2 levels, your breathing and heart rate. You wear it one night, return next morning and await results.
Sleep Apnea is one of the top causes of AF and quite easily treated without meds.
I wear a CPAP - continuous positive air pressure - I now sleep through most nights for at least 4-6 hours and QOL improved greatly.
I have trouble sleeping, I keep waking up, I must only get about 3 hours sleep at the most. this has been happening since Feb when I had a TIA and they found out that I had AF, my head is all messed up I can't cope with all this.
I know exactly how you are feeling.
We do need our sleep to be able to cope. Have you seen your GP about this? Its the best thing to do to find out why it is happening. See CDreamer's response.
There is help and treatment for this, it just needs diagnosis.
good luck kiki1952.
I find I am increasingly dependent on my c-pap machine. Laying down for even a short nap without it and I wake up soon after nodding off with panting or "funny" breathing. Long airplane trips are a nuisance since I cannot nod off.
When I'm in fast AF, I can never lie down as it makes me feel much worse. I'm asthmatic, so not sure if this adds to the feeling of mild suffocation when I lie down, (but I'm ok when not in AF).
I have bought a soft, comfy armchair that reclines. Now my 'AF nights' are spent cosied up with the tv on low, and at least I can drift in and out of sleep and be entertained by the tv if I'm awake. Which is a big improvement on trying to sleep in bed with five pillows, getting upset by being awake :o)
I agree with the other posters, it's a good idea to checked out for sleep apnoea etc. Good luck!
