Very interesting read, thanks for posting.
Interesting and tends to confirm my own reservations on such devices. there is also a view that LAA actually has an important function not yet fully understood.
Re his paragraph:
"Both studies looked at real-world data on how the device performs when used by regular doctors outside the clinical trial. Real-world observational studies are important because a therapy (drug or device) may not deliver the same outcomes when used outside the protective confines of a trial"
My Amplatzer device was fitted post trial by the doctor who had led the trial at the Royal Sussex and had fitted 110 by then, Even with so many patients under his belt St Jude Medical still had an observer present at my procedure.
I took clopidogrel for the first month and will finish my six months on mini aspirin at the end of October. Echocardiogram showed the device correctly seated and I do not need another follow up. Even if it is has no better an outcome than medications at least I am med free and removed from the problems I had with warfarin when NOACs were contra indicated.
Remember that the AF Association is pressing for the various devices to be funded by the NHS and they are FDA approved.
