Apixaban and Ingrowing toenail surgery

I am contemplating having an ingrowing toenail treated with surgery, which I understand is a relatively simple procedure which involves a tourniquet and a local anaesthetic. The registered podiatrist I shall use is familiar with warfarin issues but (surprise surprise) not familiar with NOACs. I am currently on apixaban (5mg twice a day) and logic would suggest that all that is necessary is to to have the procedure more than 12 hours after the last pill and to resume as soon as the bleeding has stopped. But is anyone aware of more specific guidance (brief googling has not produced a clear answer)

Hi Realdon

I would ring your doctor or a Anti-Coag clinic for their advice, but slight more major ops (like knee surgery which I had) are stopping usually 24 to 48 hours before.

But I think you are certainly on the right lines.

Be well

Ian

Thank you for asking this, don't know the answer, but would love to! I too am on Noacs and have to have a polyps removed. Procedure has to be under general anaesthetic due to risk of bleeding. I mentioned to consultant I was on Noacs and she felt sure I would be fine to keep taking them, but would check. I on the other hand do not feel fine taking them with a risk of bleeding during the procedure so am interested to see what the anaesthetist says!

Hi

I had a cystoscopy under general anaesthetic and was told not to take apixaban the day before the procedure and restart 48 hours after op.

Hope all goes well.

(I am also interested in what to do with NOACS for the ingrowing toenail)
