What is Lone Afib and what if any medication do you take?
Lone Afib : What is Lone Afib and what... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Lone Afib
Lone AF means AF that has no known cause and is not related to any other type of heart disease.
Regarding medication it varies and you MUST ONLY take any medication with the guidance of an Electrophysiologist specialist Cardiac Consultant.
Pete
Good explanation Pete. Lone AF as opposed to valvular AF where faulty valves are the main cause by back pressure to the atrium creating stretching and breakdown of the natural pathways. AF can also be the result of surgery for valve replacement or by pass, when the extra pathways become established after the event.
10% of known afib cases are lone afib that is as Bob and Pete say have no known cause. I have lone afib, have seen 4 different cardiologists who have suggested varying different medications ranging from nothing to taking flecainide everyday and taking anticoagulants. Currently I have a low chads2vasc score so don't take anticoagulant. I was prescribed flecainide as a PIP but as I feel worse taking this rather than letting my episodes take their course I have stopped taking them. Instead I have concentrated on increasing exercise and improving my diet. As a result after 2 months I have decreased the length, number and severity of my attacks. There is currently very little robust research into lone afib which I think is why Doctors give varying advice. At the moment my afib doesn't affect my quality of life if this changes or I develop any comorbidites then I will be rethinking my decision.
