I think Sotalol is still sometimes used for atrial flutter. My EP prescribed it for me last year.

Sotalol was removed from the recommended list in June 2014 from memory but I could be wrong. It worked both as a beta blocker and anti arrhythmic drug. The reason is that in doses large enough to work as an anti arrhythmic it also has the potential to possibly cause catastrophic ventricular arrhythmias. Some EPs do still use it in a few cases but it should not be prescribed by GPs or non consultants.

I was on soltalol too before my ablation. Carried on with it for 3 months after my ablation slowly reducing the amount I took until I stopped. That was only last year..they were still using it as one of the drugs on the Trial I have been on too. Like all beta blockers, made me feel rubbish. Good luck

I have just come off 80mg of sotolol after two + years. My EP has recommended that I move to riverobaxan

The two drugs you mentioned have different purposes. Rivaroxaban is an anti-coagulant drug which is prescribed for the purpose of preventing stroke. Sotolol is in the rhythm control classification which try to get you back or keep you in sinus rhythm. Sotalol is both a beta blocker (rate control that tries to lower your heart rate) and a potassium channel blocker (which I guess is the rhythm control portion).

I take Sotalol. Have been using it on and off since 1998. Now as PIP. And works well for me, less side effects than bisoprolol.

Thanks, for the replies, sorry should have checked my grammer, ment to say, scheduled for another ablation, but the last one did not go well ,so if different drugs work, may be a option.

My cardiologist changed me to Sotalol from Bisoprolol approximately 15 months ago. The dose was gradually increased until I was taking the maximum 320 mg a day. As this did not control my AF I was changed to Bisoprolol and Flecainide which did not suit me so then put back onto Sotalol. Now take 80 mg twice a day and can take an extra dose when I get an attack, approximately every 2-3 weeks. My heart rate does not go above 120 bpm when on the Sotalol although attacks last up to 36 hours.
