I've been taking Apixaban for over three years and have had no problems with it so far. Like all anticoagulants, it increases the time taken for blood to clot, so cuts take a little longer to stop bleeding. Your dentist should be told of your prescription.
Aspirin, NSAID's such as Ibuprofen, St John's Wort and grapefruit should be avoided.
An annual blood test is usual to test kidney and liver function and the normal dose is 5mg every 12 hours.
I wear an SOS talisman with details of the drug in case of emergency.
i have been on apixaban for six months now no bother at all .i feel much better for it
I too have been taking it for around 3 years. No observed side effects and none of the hassle associated with warfarin. I do know that our relationship with warfarin varies from person to person. Some folk actually enjoy the social interaction with the regular trips to the clinic for those INR tests. And I did hear some suggest that keeping up with the frequently changing dosages keeps the mind agile............ Whatever floats your boat I say! Apixaban requires an annual blood test to check your liver and kidney functions so there's an opportunity perhaps to meet old friends........!
I have been taking it since September 2016 - no noticeable side effects - I also take some pretty heavy drugs which can effect kidney and liver function, as can Apixaban in a small minority of people, so I have blood draws every 3-4 weeks - all results have been excellent which is a very good sign. My doctors suggested Apixaban because less likely to cause side effects and interact with other drugs.
If Apixaban is lone drug than I would think bloods every 6 months would be ok - that is what my GP surgery use as a general protocol with a full annual check up and review.
Hi Julie woo have been on apaxaban now for 1 week, this is the 2nd time I have been prescribed this new anticoagulant!!!!!! 1st time 2 years ago it caused internal bleeding which made me feel very weak and generally unwell!! Here we go again have been put back on it as I have gone to the next stage of our heart condition - permanent af. I am so hoping it works this time as I now have a very fast heartbeat and hoping I will be able to have the ablation operation. Good luck - keep us all up to date with your progress and I wish all fellow af sufferers a happy Easter and hope the sun shines in your part of the country!!!
I have been taking apixaban since December 2015 with no noticeable side effects and blood tests results fine. After a lot of research, I had decided this was the NOAC I would prefer if I had to take one, and as it happened the Consultant at the anti-coagulation clinic said it was her preferred choice as it had less side effects. My EP also said that apixaban was deemed safer than aspirin as regards bleeds, so this gave me added reassurance.
