I am sure I have read on here,, if you are having any dental treatment, ask for a different injunction, which is safer for people with A.F.

Can anyone enlighten me please.

Non adrenaline. Doesn't work as well but shouldn't set off AF

Yes - non-adrenaline injection which is not as long-lasting but did the job perfectly for me to have a large tooth taken out. No great numb lips for ages afterwards was a plus! My dentist said not to worry as he could top up the dose if needed for longer work.

Thank-you for that

Yes, make sure it's non adrenaline. Worked very well for me. I always emphasise this each time as many years ago I was given an adrenaline based one which sent my heart rate soaring. Gave the dentist a fright too !

Non adrenaline, there is more than one kind. I have had a huge broken tooth extracted and root canal treatment and didn't feel a thing!

@hairdresserme Novacaine cointains epinephrine (adrenaline) which is to stop excessive bleeding; the once that is for afib is called carbocaine---no epinephrine , does not last as long. so dentist has to renew shot more often--but works very well on pain relief. These are the names of these meds in the USA.

I always had my dentist use a non-adrenaline freezing for dental work but noticed that it required several injections and I experienced pain. Almost 6 years ago I changed dentists due to a move to a different city. I discussed the issue with my new dentist. His take on this was that he rather use a freezing with a reduced amount of adrenalin vs the non-adrenaline because if you experience any pain, your body will react by releasing many times more adrenaline into the body and be counterproductive for persons with AF. I agreed to his approach and have not had any problems whatsoever in these past 6 years.

I have had non adrenaline injections for my last three visits after reading about it on here. A dentist friend said she would prefer to use adrenaline containing one because of the effect mentioned by Plantwords as she felt a pain free patient was more important. HOWEVER I had no pain nor any further injections needed with non adrenaline jab. My dentist said that it takes a bit longer to work and the reason it is a bit less effective is that the adrenaline stops the local from spreading and therefore keeps it concentrated in the area in which it is needed. I must say that for 5 years with AF I have had adrenaline containing injections with no ill effects. It is not advised in the dentist's protocols to withhold adrenaline in AF.

I've had non adrenaline injections for the last 20 years and I've never had pain during a filling or extraction.
