STILL BET CONFUSE ABOUT VISIT TO DENTIST PLEASE
What does NICE say? I know for warfarin it says don't stop.
I am on warfarin and my dentist told me never to stop ever for dental treatment and that INR could be up to 4.0 so I wouldn't stop if she wasn't there and I had to see someone else. The only exception is major dental reconstruction work in a hospital.
Hi Karim
I would check with the dentist, unless you are having really heavy work done, then the answer is usually no, but you must inform the dentist you are taking an anti-coagulant. Also if you are having any anaesthesia remember please to point out that they should not use adrenaline as it often aggravates AF
Be well
Ian
I had some work done on a broken tooth and a then had a related a big filling a couple of weeks ago. I didn't stop apixaban - didn't even think about it. Just make sure your dentist knows - mine was quite knowledgable and was totally unconcerned.
I bled a little but nothing untoward and no problems whatsoever afterwards.
I understand that you should ask for a non adrenaline based anaesthetic if you need one - but I didn't do that either because I didnt know!
Hope this helps
Ruth
Ensure your dentist has an up to date history of your medical history and a list of your current medications.
Ensure he/she understands the consequences of not using adrenaline based local anaesthetics - there has been several recent posts of posters and dentists who did not and the consequences.
Most people on NOACs seem to be told that it may not be necessary to stop taking them but it is often different for Wafarin so do check with both your GP and your dentist.
Karim - I would call your dental surgery and ask for advice on this.

My dentist and doctor didn' t know what to do so my doctor sent me to see a specialist dealing with ant-coagulants and he said for a tooth out stop taking for 2 days only. For dental hygenist work etc keep on taking the tablets.
Gosh Pirnough, I would be worried by that advice but I wonder if the specialist was referring only to Warfarin which leaves the system very slowly over days. The NOAC's have a very short half life, 12 to 14 hours for twice daily doses so 2 days sounds risky to me and I wouldn't agree for a tooth extraction. Just a thought.
I had a large tooth taken out without any problems and without stopping my Apixaban. The dentist made my appointment for 8.15am, observed me for 15 minutes afterwards to ensure all was OK, then packed the socket with dissolving gauze and stitched it up and I went home happy to take my morning dose of Apixaban at 9.30.
Mine was a referral to a dental consultant on the NHS because of my awkward roots and I would have been unhappy to have had to stop Apixaban. As suggested, look up NICE guidelines and talk again to your dentist. Perhaps even suggest a referral to a consultant dentist with experience of Rivaroxaban patients. Don't forget the adrenaline free injections.
Best wishes
I take rivaroxavan once a day and he only suggested two days for the most serious extractions. Otherwise only one day if it was a strzight forward case and not to stop for fillings etc.
