Visit to Antarctica

Does anyone know how visiting a cold region like a cruise to Antarctica would affect someone with permanent AF. I am in my early 80s and is one of the few items on my bucket list. Thanks JanetL

On the basis that you wouldn’t be forced to venture out into the bitter cold I should think it would be a wonderful experience. Make sure you pack your Damart’s though....😉.

Of course you are likely to be tempted to sample all sorts of naughty edible delights and perhaps drink more alcohol than usual, but I expect you will be able to restrain from excessive debauchery. Go for it Janet, and have a great time......

That’s debauchery as in excesses of food and drink!! 🤭

I always struggle with the extremities getting cold in winter, I remember last Winter my hands went blue almost from pushing the push chair to school and back. So I had some battery operated gloves.

Extremes of temperature usually affect heart rate and circulation and AF specifically so you'll need to keep warm. But I would do everything I could to get there if it was an option!

I think it depends on personal circumstances, how fit you are generally, age, if you get symptomatic etc. my husband & I wanted to that trip but whe. We looked at the travel routes, flights etc decided it was too much for us.

I found I can no tolerate extreme cold - less than -5C - any longer as it saps my energies and upsets my vagus nerve and that upsets my heart - and as an ex-dinghy sailor and scuba diver I used to tolerate cold water immersion very well.

But I am 68, have several other conditions. The other concerning factor for us is being so far from medical centres as I have a rare condition which can affect my breathing for which I would need immediate help. Stress exacerbates that condition.

If I were in my 50’s, fit and had no other conditions - try stopping me!

Tourism is bad for the Antarctic so be consoled that if you can't go you have done your bit for the ecosystem 😊

You go Janet. You'll know when it's too cold to venture out. I would just enjoy the fabulous views from a warm indoor viewing deck eating and drinking(in moderation of course) all the nice things on offer. Your only here once Janet. Dance the dance. ❤️

Take the appropriate clothing, thermal everything lol, adequate medication etc.etc.etc., and have a wonderful trip, A/F should not preclude you from doing anything you want to do, one life.....live it! Have a wonderful time.

Wow - great respect. I would be interested in knowing how your health insurance quotes are going?

Just found this post, did you go? We went last year and it was simply, utterly amazing. Loads of older people on board and can't see that AF would make any difference if you're generally OK to travel.
