Hi everyone - has anyone ever had an AF episode following local gum numbing at the dentist? I seem to have a lengthy attack over a few days following my visit. Could this be due to a reaction to the anasthetic?
Dentist and AF : Hi everyone - has... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Dentist and AF
If you have AF you must not have local anaesthetic containing adrenaline. Always ask for the one without. This is not unknown although I wouldn't say it is proof.
Agree with Bob - adrenaline is fuel for my AF, so I always ask for adrenaline-free injections.
I had a 'reaction' following a local anaesthetic at the dentist when an adrenaline version was used. Dentist apologised. I must say though that subsequent visits with non-adrenaline anaesthetic is slower working and less effective for me.
Thank you for raising this. I have two procedures coming up and have already told them they must use local anaesthetic without adrenalin. I will remind them again when I go.
Thanks so much everyone I will make sure it is adrenaline free next time!!
Yes and I blacked out - it was local containing adrenaline but there are alternatives!
Yes. The dentist was finr about using the adrenalin free injection. It's s very common side effect of racing heart following injection. I don't think it can do anyone any good. The old ones worked well enough but just not as speedy and you might need more depending on the work to be done.
I had some major filling work also two crowns at the front on another occasion. Dentist knew about PAF and I'd rung my cardios sec re local because I'm on flecainide. Cardio said no problem but didn't mention no adrenalin so don't know if I had it or not but no AF anyway!
Returned to persistent AF following a tooth extraction some weeks ago even though I told them to use adrenalin free anaesthetic. I went into AF around 6 hours later, I don't know if this was related to the dentistry or not.
I did have a brief episode like that, once not long before my AF began in earnest. Dentist said that happens sometimes.
Interesting. I joined a new dentist surgery just today and as soon as I advised about AF, the dentist said she wouldn't use adrenaline based injections and wanted to know my INR reading. Apparently they don't worry until it is something more than 4.5 or so. I felt well looked after and confident I was in good hands.
although i've read that svt and af differ in that svt is a nerve or pathway that is there from birth and therefore the trigger is not relative the way it can be with af, i still looked at possible triggers for my attack and one thing was i had had a lot of dental work done in the previous months including injections.
