Steroids and Cathether ablation.

Hi folks

Anyone have any experience of being on steroids whilst having an ablation. Im booked in for the 14th april but I want to see my EP first as there are a few things I want to discuss including this issue. Im taking low dose 5mg now for PMR and to be honest I dont feel great at the moment as I am not sleeping.  I think one probably needs to be 100 percent for this op. Ironically when I googled the steroids and ablation I have found an article whereby they actually recommend steroids to help with post op problems and reoccurences ! Anyway any comments very welcome.

I supplement with injectable testosterone. I've had 2 ablations - and have now been in NSR since August 10, 2015. Good luck!

If you are worried why not email your queries to the EP or his secretary or the AF nurse whichever you have the contact detaIls for. Surely better not to risk delaying the ablation.

Ablation is not an operation and many people have sedation rather than GA so it is not as if you have to recover from a large wound and anaesthesia.  I was discharged less than 24 hours after the ablation feeling so much better than when I went in.

Steroids are notorious for disrupting sleep, sometimes taking them first thing in the morning can help?  If there is any difficulty you won't have any time to taper off so the sooner you speak to someone with your concern, the better.  I would imagine they would assist healing rather than disrupt anything but making sure your EP has ALL your notes and is aware of other conditions and meds is always a good idea.

It is natural to feel apprehensive before any hospital treatment and I think we have all dreamed up something that could delay or cancel the procedure but it really is much, much easier than you can possibly imagine.  Important thing is to to rest plenty for the healing period of 12 weeks or so, do nothing but gentle exercise for first 2 weeks.

If you are concerned then I would ask your EP to consult with your consultant for your PMR, I have several conditions and my Neurologist and EP consult with each other on treatments.

Hope all goes well, best wishes CD

I am also on pred for PMR and GCA. My cardiologist told me to double the dose on the day of the procedure, which I did. No untoward consequences!

Thanks  for all comments. I have scheduled a consultation with ep next week. I will speak to him about all my concerns including the fact i am taking sleeping tablets as i cant sleep. I dont think its the worries over ablation thats giving me insomnia its other issues but they all add up!
