Hi just introducing myself. I was first diagnosed afib 2011 had a successful ablation and lived pretty tablet free until diagnosed with PMR last December started a course of steroids which im sure kick started mt afib again as my heart rate rapidly increased on steroids. Due for 2nd ablation in April although im concerned as my cardiac consultant says I have a leaky mitral valve which as i understand can cause afib so am pessimistic about the results. Also seeing a sleep clinic guy next week as I wake up a lot in the night. Not sure if the wakenings are causing afib episodes or the afib is causing me to wake think its the former. I read your posts with great interest its a wonderful community.

Hi there fitzsimmonsa. Yes, I think lots of us go into AF during the night and for me there's definitely been some connection with sleeping/waking.
It sounds like you are moving ahead in at least two directions. I hope your ablation will be more successful than you think it might be.
At the second appointment with my EP and after my first echocardiogram my EP told me I had mild leakage in my mitral valve (and also moderate to severe leakage in my triscuspid valve). I think (but not 100% sure as I was not as informed about AF in those early days of my journey) that he said that AF can cause leakage in the mitral valve because of the fibrillation of the atrium and that atrium can return to normal size and leakage stop if back in NSR for a good period of time.
Sleep apnea is a recognised cause of AF, so it is worth getting your sleep issues sorted.
