I was told that NSAID's such as Ibuprufen and Diclofenac increase the risk of bleeding and stroke in people taking anticoagulants.

Two reasons. One they affect anticoagulants and increase bleeding risks and two ibuprophen has been proved to be an actual cause of AF. Note cause not just trigger. A study in Denmark about four years ago showed that people on long term use of the drug had a very high incidence of AF.

You cannot buy Ibuprofen in Spain - it's only available on prescription - that should tell you something.....

There were two studies done a couple of years ago which implicated Ibuprufen and Diclofenac in the first onset of AF in people over 55 - I think the studies were done in Holland and Denmark, if I remember rightly.

I have also read this. I was prescribed Ibuprofen for 3 years for my arthritis and hey presto - AFib .

Me too, for back pain - for years.

I was on Voltarol from being 25 yrs of age for Fibromyalgia ,this drug has now been withdrawn I believe for causing AF and other heart conditions according to my Cardiologist.

All I take now in co-codamol and paracetamol for pain relief.

Always read the info leaflet inside the packet and if still unsure ask a pharmacist. This applies to all drugs even self medicating and to all herbals and supplements.

Agree, good advice but the leaflets don't always offer you essential information for some conditions. I took Ibuprofen for headaches for years but at no time was it suggested that it caused AF otherwise I wouldn't have taken it and if it had been on the leaflet it wouldn't have been marketable. Drug & supplement companies only give the warnings they are obligated to give and nothing more.

There are certain over the counter medicines that you can't take if you are a prescribed taker of apixaban : when in doubt ask a pharmicist or your GP: my GP prescribed co-codamol for me as I'm on apixaban, digoxin and other meds as well : I'm very causious about over the counter medicines .

I think that you should ALWAYS ask the pharmacist because not all the leaflets contain all relevant info. Pharmacist can check if they don't know and often have better knowledge and experience than GPs. Also you can look on drugs.com which is an American site IN ADDITION to asking pharmacist not instead of.

The study in Denmark implicated Ibuprofen as a possible cause but for people on long term and quite high doses. If used occasionally For headaches I think it very unlikely it would cause AF. BUT once a person has AF and taking anticoagulants it is a definite no-no as it can definitely cause GI bleeding

this question was asked about a year ago, might be of help.

I would consult a pharmacist really :-)
