Hello everyone this is my first post so please bare with me. I have has AF for a couple of years but was recently diagnosed with PAF with abberant conduction. Can anyone explain what the "abberant conduction" part of this means. Thanks

PAF with abberant conduction.

Hello Tony and welcome to the forum. I was diagnosed almost two years ago and one of my list of conditions found was 'SVT with aberrant conduction'. My understanding is that a very fast ventricular rate was caused by electrical impulses escaping along a route from the atria to the ventricles not normally used. I remember reading about 'His and Purkijne fibres' being involved. When I asked my cardiologist about it, he didn't give much of an explanation nor seem to think it was too bad!
I have an appointment with my EP in three weeks' time and it is one of my questions to ask. Incidentally, since being on Flecainide, I've not had an instance of it again and the first one lasted for only 15 beats - it was caught on a Holter monitor.
Hope that is of some help - I'm not medically qualified - and there quite a lot of information on the web about it, but some is very technical.
Hi Finvola, Thanks for your welcome and response . You're right there is loads online, most of it just confused me to be honest. I was sort of coming to the same idea as you suggest but just wondered if anyone had the same experience. I'm not sure if SVT is the same as my diagnosis although in the A&E they did question whether I had gone into VT. Oh well I'm of to see my cardiologist soon so I'll have a few questions.
Thanks again
Tony
Yes, Tony - same here. My cardiologist said it could have been VT and the EP confirmed that it may have been unsustained VT. Apparently, it is difficult to distinguish between them on an ECG - according to what I have read. If I find out any more from my EP, I'll post on here.
Just found this which is readable:

Did anyone else read the post about the horrors of flecainide since it us an "autoimmune suppressant " drug and what could happen being on it then coming off? I too take it and was thrown into panic mode after reading that post.
Ronnie - as I remember that was a possibility only. I try not to worry !!!??!! about everything that might happen and concentrate on what is happening and is good.
Every action we take in life can have thousands of reactions but how many actually need to be concerned about. If Flecainide works it's great but if things start to change or side effects start - then it can be dealt with - no point in worrying whilst we have knowledge.
That was my post and it's unfortunate that it triggered your fears. The sky is not falling.

Abberant=not normal.. AF is not normal so "normal" for AF. P=paroxysmal meaning it comes and goes.
Welcome to the mad mad world of AF. Look at AF Association website where you will find countless fact sheet explaining all matters of this mongrel condition but do ask specifics here and we will try to help.
Cheers Bob "Mongrel Condition" love it. Going to use that one. Thanks for the reply.
