Heart rate and Bisoprolol.

My resting heart rate is 45-50 due to all the drugs that I'm on, however when I have go into AF my heart rate jumps around between 90 and 100 to which I then have doctors in A & E saying that because my heart isn't racing, I'm not in any danger. But prior to all the drugs my heart used to fluctuate between 125 and 150. Has anyone else had this? I take a cocktail of drugs for the AF- flecainide twice daily, Bisoprolol 3.75 twice daily, ramipril, and Dabigatrin.

I don't go to A & E until my heart has been in AF for about 7 hours and I'm starting to feel exhausted despite my cardiologist saying to go after 2 hours of AF because of the negative response I get when I get there.

The last time I went ( 2 weeks ago ) I actually was admitted and was put on an Amioderone IV. I was in for 2 days, came home and within a day I was back in AF.

After 7 hours, I rang for an ambulance and was taken to A & E where I was seen by a cocky young doctor who made me feel a nuisance despite my telling him I was obeying the orders of my cardiologist. He gave me 5mg of Bisoprolol and said that my heart would go back into rhythm then sent me home but it was a further 9 hours before it did and at the end of this period after having 2 episodes of AF in quick succession, I was fit for nothing.

Is anyone else made to feel like they are being a nuisance?

When I go into AF, I can cope with the the little fluttery arythmia but know the big bangs are going to follow and they are so uncomfortable and I feel like my heart is coming into my mouth and after a few hours my heart starts to feel so sore.

Sorry for ranting on, but AF does drag you down and rule your life.

Anyway it will be ablation time soon so let's hope that works the first time.

Nannadee this all sound quite normal to me and typical paroxysmal AF. Once I had been diagnosed I never bothered going to A and E because as you found out it was a waste of time. I always felt I would rather feel rubbish at home that sitting in a waiting room or in a ward full of sick people. I guess it is how one copes with this mongrel condition.

The bisoprolol obviously helps keep your rate down but to be honest 150 isn't that fast compared with some people. My record was 225 and they did put me on a drip for 24 hours to reduce it but I once went on a business trip to France at 140 as I knew there was nothing they could do at that time. It started on my way to the airport! When I came back they did a DCCV a few days later once my INR had been checked.

Acceptance of AF is a really big stage in dealing with the condition and we all do this at different times and to different extents. Learning NOT to let it rule your life is the second most important step so I really hope that the ablation goes some way to helping you. Don't be too impatient as I am sure that you have been told it may be three to six months before you get the full benefit.

Thanks for your reply Bob. I never know what to do cos one doctor says you must go to A & E then in A & E they are so negative.

I live on my own and do feel really scared after a few hours and suppose I just need to be with people who supposedly know what they are doing.

I guess I just feel safer in hospital- tho I hate hospitals.

I should have gone on holiday to Greece yesterday but the cardiologist advised against it and I think my travel insurance may have been a bit extreme.
