I have AF and they did an ablation on me 1 week ago. How long should I wait before starting to lift weights.

I think it depends on the reason for the AF and whether there may be other heart conditions as well, so you need to speak with your doctor. Some heart conditions e.g. Cardiomyopathies contra-indicate weight lifting

I was told do nothing for the first weeks and then not a lot more for the second. It is important not to put strain on the entry wound. Do discuss with your doctor or arrhythmia nurse.

You must speak to your consultant ep first. It depends entirely on where the ablation is and the extent of ablating. I was told minimum for doing anything is two weeks and anything that gets the heart stressed or hard longer because that can help induce AF back. I was back in persistent AF in less than 72 hours which is not that common.

I don't want to be negative, but I believe it was lifting weights that triggered my Af, a number of times, the result was me having an ablation 2 years ago, so far so good, since then I haven't lifted any weights...don't feel the need to put myself at risk.

My EP said after my ablation to give it two weeks before starting back on the heavy weights. I took his advice and I was fine. I was a little hesitant the first time I did my legs, but it went OK. As Bob states above give the entry wound time to heal.

hi...at least 3 weeks..,.I waited 5 weeks..it's not the heart, it's so that a hernia isn't caused by straining the lower core.

More cardio work (running, fast walking, is also important if you don't do much of that type of exercise.

However, as always, best to ask the exact question to your Cardiologist/Electrophysiologist.

Best of luck with recovery
