Be very, very careful!

Interesting reading. Seems a lot more research needs to be done into the potential benefits of these natural substances and affects on arrythmias.

Interesting. Thank you for posting! The journal Medical Hypotheses is respectable although its mandate is to publish speculative articles where the data may not fully justify the claims - as a way of stimulating research. Furthermore, this came out in 2006 so if taurine and arginine were magic bullets we'd know by now. The authors described three case studies but the results were striking. I wonder if subsequent follow-up studies were less promising? Based on this article alone, one might cautiously consider modest taurine / arginine supplements, or consuming taurine / arginine rich foods (e.g., nuts - but ask your doctor and as others have suggested be careful of interactions!)

Probably depends on the person but I know it has helped me. I have my next appointment with my EP on the 25th and I am going to show him the studies done on these two supplements. I had considered ablation but after doing so much better taking these supplements I have decided not to do the abalation. I went 2 weeks without an A Fib episode then I went thru a really stressful day and did have one but I took my anxiety pill and the episode was very short lived and I haven't had another one since. Most doctors will not recommend supplements. So am curious as to what my Doctor will say when I see him.

Thank you Flaka. A big supplement company I follow specifically recommends for AF Magnesium and Taurine oral spray - 6 sprays twice daily, as well some other vitamins/minerals.

The reason given for taurine was " An amino acid from protein, it's thought to make up to 50% of the amino acid found in the heart and is believed to strengthen it according to Robert Abel Jr, MD"

I believe it is also in Red Bull, haven't tried it yet and if i do I will be proceeding with caution after talking to the medics.

But "Red Bull" is one of those awful "energy drinks" that is packed with caffeine and tons of sugar. It might have taurine in it as a marketing gimmick, but basically you'd be consuming a bottle of palpitations and hyperglycaemia :)

in reply to Thomps95

Ooops, I didn't mean to suggest drinking Red Bull, just I hadn't started taking Taurine as a supplement.

As mentioned in replying to previous posts, my Naturopath put me on a Mg supplement he has used for other AF'ers Nutri Ultra Muscleze, it has worked well - the only trouble is neither he nor I know why as it contains many things apart from Mg, one of which is Taurine.

I have been using both the Taurine and L-arginine as well as soaking in bath of Epsom salts with magnesium and taking a magnesium supplement and it has totally helped me. I have not have an A Fib episode in over 2 weeks now. I have an appointment with my EP on the 25th and I am planning on showing him the literature I have on these two supplements as well as my blood pressure log for the past month which has greatly improved since taking the supplements. Anxious to see what he says. My GP has also prescribed Lorazepam for anxiety as I think my stress and anxiety had been contributing to my episodes and this has helped also.
