Trans oesophegeal echocardiogram uses a device down your throat to look at your heart from behind. This is usually to check for any clots which may be lurking in the left atrial appendage. If you have not been in INR range for long enough this is quite common.

I didn't have it done either before or during my ablation and my INR was out of range at 1.8. I asked the registrar why I hadn't had it and he said that it was because I already had a pipe down my trachea for the GA.
