Just a bit concerned that having only recently been put on warfarin, I am now to take 10mg as my INR appears to stubbornly moving up --from 1.1 6weeks ago to 1.5 yesterday. How high is safe I wonder? Is 10 mg a high dose? Also finding it quite tricky with tablets-having enough of each when it keeps changing!

Warfarin Doses
Hi Lincu2
It literally does not matter if you take 2mg or 25mg, the only thing that matters is your INR test reading, taking a higher or a lower dose makes no difference whatsoever.
It takes the body a while to adjust to the drug, so it does move up stubbornly slowly, but nothing to worry about with the dosage.
Eat normally, avoid binging, and don't avoid any foods except cranberries there is no need to change your diet at all.
If you are still struggling with a low reading in another 4 weeks or so, ask them to consider one of the newer anti-coagulants.
Be well

I take 10mgs three days a week and 9mgs the other four = 66mgs per week. At the moment, that is. I've an INR test tomorrow.
I think this is heading towards the upper end of normal, but my surgery has someone on 18mgs per day. Also someone on 1mg every other day.
I don't know why it has to be a weekly dose and not 9 one day and 10 the next for a month but no. 9 on Wednesday and Thursday as well, then alternate days! I take three blues for 9 x 2, pink blue and brown x 2 for the other 9mgs and two pinks x3 which evens out the blues and pinks. I have plenty of browns and don't reorder them.
It's all such a challenge to keep us on our toes.
I think it is important to remember that wafarin is an anti coag not a blood thinner so side effects are (in my case) minimal. I keep a couple of packets of each size of tablet. I shall be on wafarin for life and it is now just part of living my life to the full with af.
I had a bout of taking 10mg daily but now am on 5.75 daily! This has evolved over 11 years. Just make sure you have a plentiful supply of 5mg 3mg 1mg & .5mg and you should be OK. Its a bit of a palaver but you will soon get used to it. Sa

In my area they only give 3mg tablets which I think saves a lot of confusion. Easy to break in half. Other drugs also affect the dose such as antibiotics and Amioderone. When it was first explained to me by a senior member of the anticoagulant team he mentioned the big variation in doses people take. I now accept that I will be on it for life and am quite chilled about that - not just because I've gone back into NSR after many days. Can't find how to do a happy smiley face! I do hope it settles for you soon and you enjoy your holiday.
Only 3mg ?? Quire a bit of fiddling about if your dose is , say 4mg 7mg 10 mg etc ... I would lose track!
Hiya linc2u,
You seem to be focussing on the drug and its impact - which is understandable. What you don't throw in for discussion is what you were told about diet, including alcohol. What have you been told about vitamin K and its interaction with warfarin ?
Might be an idea to 'Google' topics like - 'warfarin and diet' - or 'warfarin and vitamin K' and look at what you are doing in this context. Do try and remember whatever you eat try and be consistent. Warfarin doesn't really like being involved in a 'binge' like diet.
Good luck
Aussie John
