I am in permanent AF- but fortunately have no symptoms - and off on my hols tomorrow. You must ensure that you have advised your insurance company.

Two changes I made - I now wear flight socks and carry my medication for all of the holiday in my hand luggage.

If you are worried, why not have a chat with your GP.

OK do you mean your Doc or your Cardio?, because this should come from the consultant at least, not from your GP, and I think he means persistent not permanent, permanent means that you heart will never go back into NSR and that's fairly rare, most are (like me) persistent.

As to travel, why not?, it really depends how you feel and what symptoms you get, but to be honest there is almost no reason not to travel and enjoy your holiday and you life just as before. You have to learn to control your AF and not let it control you because it will if you let it.

I am sure you have read enough here to understand that you need to be anti-coagulated, my opinion is that anyone who is persistent needs this, whatever CHADS2VACS score they have.

If your cardiologist says it's ok to fly, make sure you have travel support socks, LOTS of fluids and walk about as much as possible on the plane. I was advised to reduce the general stress os travel as much as possible- i e no rushing about at the last minute to get to the airport etc!1

Hi, I'm with Avanti since being diagnosed with A Fib on holiday last October , however I did have a stroke and spent over a week in ICU. My then insurance company linked to my bank won't insure me now if I have a heart related issue. So I went online and looked at quite a few, Avanti is £300 a year but that's because of the stroke thing. I'm still trying to claim back the money I had to spend last October , so it's swings and roundabouts I'm afraid , shop around

Not a problem Tupelo though I would certainly echo the advice about travel insurance. Providers will definitely 'wriggle' if you give them half a chance - always best to be completely up front.

I'll tell you what though, I'd be more concerned about your destination than your medical condition.

Yes, do take care in Egypt, more because of the situation than the AF! I'd love to go there one day when the dust settles a bit.

Just give yourself plenty of time and be really methodical about making sure you have everything you need - tickets, passport, your meds in their boxes, know what you can and can't take on the plane and all that detail stuff so you're not under any stress or pressure. And then enjoy yourself!

Before my lung condition worsened I was told as long as I try to keep flights down to 3.5 hours and keep my legs moving plus flight socks I should be okay.

It may be a bit early for you but self testing whilst on holiday is brilliant. I am in persistent AF and a couple of years ago bought - with my GP's approval and instruction - a self testing kit which I have found invaluable especially on holiday as I take a six week holiday in India every year. Changes in temperature and food etc. can have an marked effect on blood clotting however with minor adjustment to my dose of warfarin I can keep pretty close to the 2.5 I am aiming at. Others on holiday at the same time go to the local clinic for a blood test and have to go back the following day for the results (not free) BUT importantly the clinic is not prepared to give advice on changing the dose if the result is way off the target.
