warfrin/alternative ?
There are currently three Novel Oral Anticoagulants (NOAC) licensed for use in the UK: Rivaroxaban (also known as Xarelto), Dabigatran and Apixaban. I would advise doing a little research before you speak to your doctor. As you rightly say, they don't require testing in the same way that warfarin does. However, some people are put off by the current lack of an antidote in the case of a major bleed and some doctors are refusing to prescribe the drugs as they are much more expensive than warfarin.
Get as many facts and opinions as possible - but make your own mind up about what suits you. I take Rivaroxaban as I didn't get on with Warfarin. I can't comment on the merits of the three NOACs compared to one another. I know that the cardiologist considered Dabigatran as well but Rivaroxaban was her preferred option.
Hi, I take Rivaoxaban. No problems 16 months in and no side effects. A little concerned about current lack of an antidote in case of a major bleed but the benefits outweigh the risks as far as I am concerned. As they have a short half life they are soon out of your system which is good, however you need to be sure to take them at the same time of day (1 a day), ever day to ensure protection. Always take with food as it ensures they are properly absorbed.
I was prescribed them by my cardiologist and supported by my GP when it was decided I needed anticoagulation. I have not taken warfarin. No issue about cost from my GP she fully supported the request.
Hope this helps.

I asked my GP about the NOAC’s but they weren't prepared to prescribe because of the lack of antidote (and probably the cost although they didn't say that), so I had no choice but to take warfarin.
hi i have been on dabigatran for 2 months after a couple of years on warfarin no problems to date
